U.S. Senators Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), and Steve Daines (R-Mont.) have announced the Family Security Act 2.0<\/a>, an updated version of the Family Security Act that is pro-life, pro-marriage, and pro-family. According to a press release<\/a> on Romney’s website, the act aims to “modernize antiquated federal policies into a fully paid-for, cash benefit for working families starting during pregnancy….”<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite being the bedrock of our country, there\u2019s perhaps never been a more challenging time than today to raise a family,\u201d\u00a0said Romney.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s no coincidence that fewer and fewer people are getting married and having children. We must do better to help families meet the challenges they face as they take on the most important work any of us will ever do\u2014raising our society\u2019s children. This proposal proves that we can accomplish this without adding to the deficit or creating another new federal program without any reforms. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the coming months to continue improving this plan to best meet the needs of families across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The benefits of the new act include support for families beginning during pregnancy through childhood, encouragement for parents to be married, and equal treatment for both working and stay-at-home parents. The cash benefit is set at $350 a month for each young child and $250 for each school-aged child beginning during mid-pregnancy. According to the press release, the cost of the plan would be fully paid for by consolidating existing federal spending.<\/p>\n

\u201cFamilies are the building blocks of our communities\u2014we must ensure parents and children are receiving the support they need. Our plan will ensure family policies are working for real families, while not adding to the national debt.\u201d\u00a0said Daines. \u201cThis framework will strengthen our commitment to help working American families grow and thrive, while also recognizing that the costs of a new baby begin even before that child is born.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Family Security Act 2.0 is endorsed by multiple pro-life groups, including the Family Research Council, Democrats for Life, Priests for Life, CatholicVote, Feminists for Life of America, and Live Action. Further details can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
