{"id":270016,"date":"2022-06-15T14:43:23","date_gmt":"2022-06-15T19:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=270016"},"modified":"2023-11-14T19:21:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T01:21:24","slug":"british-pregnancy-advisory-service-late-term-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/british-pregnancy-advisory-service-late-term-scotland\/","title":{"rendered":"British Pregnancy Advisory Service lobbies to vastly increase late-term abortions in Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/abortion-provider-bpas-lobbies-to-vastly-increase-number-of-late-term-abortion-services-in-scotland\">Right to Life UK<\/a>)\u00a0The UK\u2019s largest abortion provider, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), is lobbying the Scottish Government to vastly increase the number of late-term abortion services in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The Scotsman <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stv.tv\/scotland\/women-and-teens-forced-to-have-abortions-in-england-due-to-neglect-from-nhs-health-boards-in-scotland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> that eight health boards in Scotland do not carry out the abortions beyond 18 weeks, four have a gestational time limit of 20 weeks and NHS Fife has a limit of 15 weeks and five days.<\/p>\n<p>A newspaper investigation in Scotland has found that women are travelling to England for late-term abortions because the service is not available in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Rachael Clarke, chief of staff at BPAS, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stv.tv\/scotland\/women-and-teens-forced-to-have-abortions-in-england-due-to-neglect-from-nhs-health-boards-in-scotland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that they are lobbying the Scottish Government to provide taxpayer funding for abortion services that would provide abortion up to 24 weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Late-term abortion and feticide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What constitutes a \u201clate-term\u201d abortion varies, but in general, any abortion after 16 weeks is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.nhs.uk\/~\/media\/website\/patient-information-leaflets\/gynaecology\/termination-of-pregnancy\/late-medical-termination-of-pregnancy-1623-weeks.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late term<\/a>. Abortions after 22 weeks in the UK usually involve a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcog.org.uk\/media\/21lfvl0e\/terminationpregnancyreport18may2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">procedure<\/a> called \u201cfeticide\u201d in which the life of the unborn baby is ended via a lethal injection of potassium chloride through his mother\u2019s abdomen into his heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/most-late-term-abortions-are-not-done-for-medical-reasons\/\">Most late-term abortions are not done for medical reasons<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The administration of potassium chloride in executions in the USA is considered so painful that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/the-drugs-we-use-for-executions-can-cause-inhumane-pain-and-suffering\/2017\/05\/11\/267478d0-359e-11e7-b412-62beef8121f7_story.html?utm_term=.03b4cde321b9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">necessary<\/a> to first administer an anaesthetic before its use. There is, however, no such obligation to use painkillers in late-term selective-reduction procedures in the United Kingdom, despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/call-for-review-of-abortion-time-limits-after-new-evidence-reveals-unborn-babies-could-feel-pain-at-just-13-weeks\/\">mounting evidence<\/a> that the unborn baby is capable of experiencing pain and distress.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said: \u201cEvery abortion is a great tragedy, but late-term abortions are especially barbaric. The real scandal here is that late-term abortions are performed in England and that some people want them to be performed in Scotland too.
