Both work at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) Doernbecher Children\u2019s Hospital. OHSU recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ohsu.edu\/2022\/06\/08\/ohsu-expands-fetal-care-program-in-utero-treatments-for-complex-pregnancies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the expansion of its fetal care program, which treated Khovny for hydrops \u2014 a life-threatening condition in which fluids accumulate in a fetus\u2019s body \u2014 while she was still in utero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Khovny\u2019s parents could have gone to OHSU for a very different outcome. They could have gone to OHSU to end Khovny\u2019s life. \u201cWe care for people experiencing pregnancy loss as well as medical and surgical termination of pregnancy for all reasons, including fetal anomaly (abnormality),\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/womens-health\/abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> OHSU\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At one hospital campus, doctors fight to save preborn children with conditions that doctors at the hospital&#8217;s other campus would use as justification for their homicide. The only difference between the children being cared for by OHSU\u2019s fetal medicine program and those being aborted is that the former are <em>wanted<\/em>\u00a0by their biological parents, and the latter are not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But should wantedness really determine whether someone lives or dies?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to some, the answer is yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pro-child-unwanted-die\/\">Abortion advocate claims to be pro-child while arguing for the \u2018unwanted\u2019 to die<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Times<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently published an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2022-06-12\/abortion-reproductive-justice-rights-roe-supreme-court-product-of-rape\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opinion piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Victoria Reyes, who was conceived in rape. Reyes has \u201cachieved many accomplishments \u2014 a Ph.D. from Princeton, a tenure-track job at a research university, fellowships, grants, awards and two children.\u201d Yet Reyes seems to argue that she herself <em>should have been aborted<\/em>, because her mother at times expressed not having wanted her, and because \u201cfocusing on what I\u2019ve achieved says nothing about what my birth cost [my mother] \u2014 the trauma etched into her body forever. The stretch marks, the mental anguish. The years, the decades of pain and struggle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stretch marks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> really a legitimate reason to end the life of an innocent child? What about past trauma, such as that inflicted by rape? Or a potentially difficult future \u2014 for mother or child? Or yes, even alleged unwantedness?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact is, there is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a valid reason to kill a preborn child. The solution to Reyes\u2019s concerns is not her own non-existence \u2014 it\u2019s care and therapy for both her and her mother to help them cope with their trauma and struggles. Reyes seems not to see the value in her own life (although her children would likely disagree), or feels that its value is outweighed by the struggles she believes her existence has created for her mother.\u00a0 But those are in and of themselves signs of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/child-abuse\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20370864\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">child abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trauma and\/or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/depression\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356007\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which can be treated and overcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reyes\u2019s life has just as much value as Khovny\u2019s \u2014 whether Reyes recognizes it or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humanity is not conferred by one\u2019s wantedness, or the circumstances under which one was conceived, or one\u2019s future prospects. And every human has inalienable rights from the first moment of existence; the foremost of these \u2014 the foundation of every other right \u2014 is the right to live.
