Politico<\/span> recently published a long <\/span>interview<\/span><\/a> with Rebecca Gomperts \u2014\u00a0founder of Aid Access<\/a>, Women on Web, and Women on Waves<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 that was short on facts, with Gomperts\u00a0<\/span>playing fast and loose with the truth throughout the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gomperts is infamous for flouting international abortion laws. Her Women On Waves organization commits abortions on ships in international waters near countries where abortion is ilegal. Women on Web mails abortion pills all over the globe. Aid Access similarly mails abortion pills across the United States in <\/span>defiance<\/span><\/a> of an FDA cease-and-desist order. The organization also supplies so-called \u201c<\/span>advanced provision<\/span><\/a>\u201d abortion pills to women who are not pregnant. Gomperts <\/span>told<\/span><\/a> Politico<\/span> she hopes U.S. doctors will start to do likewise to evade abortion restrictions \u201cby writing a prescription for perfectly lawful medications for someone who is not, in fact, pregnant.\u201d Although misoprostol \u2014 one of the drugs in the typical two-drug abortion pill regimen \u2014\u00a0is approved for other uses, mifepristone \u2014\u00a0the other drug in the regimen \u2014\u00a0is not.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gomperts openly admits she advises her clients \u201cto lie to everybody,\u201d including doctors, about having an abortion \u2013 a practice which has been <\/span>shown<\/span><\/a> to radically increase the risk of complications. She also told her own fair share of falsehoods to <\/span>Politico<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lie #1: You can’t die from abortion pills<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAbortion pills are something that, actually, you cannot die from,\u201d Gomperts told <\/span>Politico<\/span>. If this is the case, why does Aid Access\u2019s <\/span>own site<\/span><\/a> absolve the organization from liability for \u201cany type of loss or damage, including personal injury or death\u201d resulting from their services?\u00a0<\/span>If the possibility of death were non-existent, Aid Access surely would not feel the need to disclaim responsibility therefrom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lie #2: Women can accurately date gestational age themselves<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t need to do an ultrasound for a medical abortion. \u2026 People can make a really good prediction of how long they\u2019re pregnant,\u201d Gomperts also falsely claimed. <\/span>Research<\/span><\/a> shows that about 15% of women seeking the abortion pill underestimate<\/em> the duration of their pregnancies. This means that a large number of women seeking Gomperts\u2019s so-called \u201cservices\u201d may well be over the 10-week mark beyond which the abortion pill is no longer approved for use. <\/span><\/p>\n

The risk of abortion pill-related <\/span>complications<\/span><\/a>, including <\/span>failure<\/span><\/a>, hemorrhage, and retained placenta, increases as gestation progresses. Gomperts claims that bleach is more dangerous than the abortion pill (people do not typically ingest bleach, of course) while at the same time advocating a \u201c<\/span>no test<\/span><\/a>\u201d dispensing protocol which does not screen out ectopic pregnancies \u2013 a circumstance which is life-threatening for the mother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gomperts was inadvertently accurate when she claimed that the United States, in its abortion policies, is \u201cnot an outlier in the countries that have very autocratic regimes.\u201d But while Gomperts meant this in the sense that abortion restrictions are \u201cautocratic,\u201d the fact is that the United States is one of only <\/span>seven<\/span><\/a> countries that allow elective abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy, over half of which are totalitarian regimes like China and North Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gomperts has demonstrably little regard for the law; she clearly has equally scant regard for truth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
