Abortion advocates are playing every emotionally charged card they can in the wake of the leaked Supreme Court decision indicating the court will overturn Roe v. Wade<\/em> in the coming weeks. To convince society that the end of Roe<\/em>\u00a0would mean the end of equality for women, pro-abortion enthusiasts are now falsely proclaiming that criminalizing abortion will lead to more teen pregnancies.<\/p>\n

On May 24, USA Today<\/a> published a piece entitled, “Abortion rights helped lower teen pregnancy. Now Gen Z girls might have those rights taken away.” Except \u2014 abortion has not lowered<\/em> the teen pregnancy rate. Abortion doesn’t prevent pregnancies<\/em> \u2014 it ends pregnancies by killing growing preborn children.<\/p>\n

Abortion has not decreased teen pregnancy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though the article does admit that “Gen Z girls are… having less sex than their predecessors…” it also claims that Roe v. Wade<\/em> helped to reduce teen pregnancy. Despite this claim, legalized abortion is not the cause of the decline in the teen pregnancy rate.<\/p>\n

According to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute<\/a>, the teen pregnancy rate peaked in 1990 at 117.6 pregnancies per 1,000 teenage girls aged 15 to 19. That was 17 years after abortion was legalized in the United States. Since then, the teen pregnancy rate has declined by an astounding 73%. In 2017, there were 14 pregnancies per 1,000 girls ages 15-17 (down from a peak of 75 in 1989), and 57 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 18-19 (down from a peak of 175 in 1991). While groups like Planned Parenthood jump to take credit for this decline because they sell birth control and abortions to teens, the truth is that other factors appear to be the cause \u2014 including an overall continued decline in teenage sexual activity.<\/p>\n

As Dr. Michael J. New previously reported<\/a>, research from the National Survey of Family Growth\u00a0reveals that<\/a>, between 1988 and 2015, the percentage of teenage boys aged 15-19 who had ever<\/em> had sex dropped from 60% to 38%. In addition, during that same time period, the rate of teenage girls aged 15-19 who had ever<\/em> had sex dropped from 51% to 42%. And information from the National Youth Risk Behavior Survey likewise shows that between 1991 and 2017, the percentage of high school students who had ever<\/em> had sex dropped from 54.1% to 38.4%.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, a study of the effects of Planned Parenthood found that when Planned Parenthood leaves a community<\/a>, the teen pregnancy rate in that community declines. From 1999 to 2006, Planned Parenthood of Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle closed 16 of its facilities. By 2008, there wasn’t a single Planned Parenthood to be found. And amazingly, the teen pregnancy rate in that area “reached its lowest point in recorded history two years after disaffiliation of the last two remaining facilities.” According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the teen pregnancy rate dropped from 43.6 per 1,000 girls aged 13-17 to 24.1 \u2014 a decline of more than 40%.<\/p>\n

There has also been a 53% decline in the U.S. abortion rate since 1980. In fact, between 1980 and 2017, the abortion rate for teenage girls aged 15-19 dropped by more than 82% while the abortion rate among women aged 35-39 fell just eight and a half percent during those same years.<\/p>\n

Not only are fewer teens having sex, but if they do have sex and pregnancy occurs, fewer teens are having abortions.<\/p>\n

The misguided girls<\/strong><\/p>\n

USA Today writers interviewed teenage girls about their thoughts on the possible end of Roe<\/em> and teen pregnancy. What they had to say gives a frightening glimpse into what\u00a0American girls have been taught about themselves and their value as human beings.<\/p>\n

One teen girl revealed that she knows the fastest route to her local Planned Parenthood, just in case.<\/p>\n

Another told USA Today that she thinks without Roe<\/em> the U.S. could “get to that extreme” of The Handmaid’s Tale.<\/p>\n

A third girl told USA Today that she and her friends are “very active” sexually and that not being able to have an abortion would be “horrible.”<\/p>\n

And a college student said if Roe<\/em> is overturned she might move back to Canada where abortion is “publicly funded as a medical procedure.” She said, “I just feel that we’re foreshadowing something that’s truly sinister.”<\/p>\n

These girls have been taught that being “very active” sexually is normal, but that getting pregnant and being a mother \u2014 a natural, biological part of sex \u2014 is not. Each of these girls has bought the lie that they can not achieve educational or career success or have a life of value if they do not hold the power to end the lives of their own children. Their value has been reduced to that of mere sexual beings \u2014 but pregnancy and motherhood are viewed as weaknesses.<\/p>\n

But what’s worse is that they have taken on (and are celebrating) the role of oppressor, believing that dominating another human being because that human being is physically weaker makes them<\/em> powerful. Legalized abortion has made women and girls believe they must be more like the worst of men in order to succeed.<\/p>\n

Roe v. Wade<\/em> failed the girls of America. It taught them they are worthless and incapable once they become mothers. And now they are actually afraid of a world in which they can’t wield the power to kill. But legalized abortion has not made women equal<\/a>\u00a0(because they already are), it has not saved women from poverty<\/a>, and it has not \u2014 through any stretching of the statistics \u2014 reduced the teen pregnancy rate.<\/p>\n
