A recent Pew Research Center <\/span>poll<\/span><\/a> on abortion attitudes highlights the complex and often contradictory nature of American opinion on this issue. While most of the people polled (61%) expressed some sort of support for legal abortion, more than \u2154 (two-thirds) of those who did so also expressed support for limitations on abortion. And of the 37% who expressed the view that abortion should be illegal, roughly \u00be (three-fourths) felt there should be exceptions to that rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is certainly not a new finding. <\/span><\/p>\n

Most polls<\/span><\/a> show that Americans support abortion only up to particular gestational limits and\/or only in specific circumstances. The Pew <\/span>poll<\/span><\/a> found that 56% felt that the duration of a woman\u2019s pregnancy should matter in determining the legality of abortion<\/em>, with 43% stating that abortion should be illegal at 24 weeks, the commonly accepted age of so-called \u201c<\/span>viability<\/span><\/a>.\u201d Currently in the United States, abortion is legal up to birth under Roe v. Wade<\/em> and its partner decision Doe v. Bolton<\/em>, with many states allowing abortion without restriction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps more noteworthy are responses related to abortion policy and its role in our society. When asked whether doctors should be required to notify a parent\/guardian before performing an abortion on a minor, for example, an overwhelming 70% said \u201cyes,\u201d including 56% of those who support broadly legal abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the poll asked what should happen to people who commit, obtain, or assist another in obtaining an abortion in situations where it is illegal. Roughly half (47%) felt that women who obtain illegal abortions should face penalties of some sort; 60% felt those who commit illegal abortions should be penalized; 41% and 43%, respectively, felt that those who find and schedule and those who pay for illegal abortions should be penalized. Thirty-one percent (31%) stated that doctors who commit illegal abortions should lose their licenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Respondents were also asked about their degree of agreement with the statement \u201cIf legal abortions are too hard to get, then it will be more difficult for women to get ahead in society.\u201d Roughly half (49%) expressed disagreement<\/em> with this idea. This shows that Americans do not necessarily agree with the <\/span>flawed media narrative<\/span><\/a> that women need abortion to succeed in society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two other statements with which respondents were asked their degree of agreement were, \u201cThe decision about whether to have an abortion should belong solely to the pregnant woman,\u201d and \u201cHuman life begins at conception, so a fetus is a person with rights.\u201d Surprisingly, \u2153 of those polled agreed with <\/span>both<\/span><\/i> statements. <\/span><\/p>\n

Chillingly, this suggests that there is a large proportion of the American population who believe that preborn children have the same standing as born people, but killing them should nonetheless be allowed.<\/span><\/p>\n
