Unfortunately, many viewers may take her words at face value, without realizing that science has not only changed, but dramatically so since <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> was decided. Today, of course, such remarkable technology exists that not only are ultrasounds widely and routinely available (something that was not the case in 1973), but 4D ultrasounds are commonplace \u2014 letting parents see who a child in the womb most resembles, months before the child enters the light of day. The science-based, fact-focused Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/memo-to-speaker-pelosi-science-has-changed-significantly-since-1973\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a>\u00a0a press release shortly after Pelosi&#8217;s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>CLI\u2019s Dr. Tara Sander Lee, a senior fellow and director of life sciences at Charlotte Lozier Institute, said in the release:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that\u00a0after three years of telling America to \u2018follow the science,\u2019 Speaker Pelosi is now ignoring the science because it\u2019s inconvenient for her extreme political position\u00a0of legalizing abortion until the moment of birth. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>Has Speaker Pelosi been asleep for the past 50 years? Major scientific advancements have revolutionized ultrasound technology, fetal diagnosis, and the science of fetal pain. Doctors are now treating babies in utero before birth and at the same gestational age that Speaker Pelosi proclaims a right to kill. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>T<\/em><em>here have also been miraculous advancements in our ability to care for extremely premature babies, and all of this has occurred since\u00a0Roe.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S-lQOooYAs8\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nancy-pelosi-dianne-feinstein-refuse-say-15-week-baby-human\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pelosi and Feinstein refuse to say if 15-week preborn baby is a human being<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, science proves now what was not always clear in the past: that abortion destroys a living person. CLI\u2019s response noted, \u201cThe black and white dots of an ultrasound before\u00a0<em>Roe<\/em> could barely identify the head of an unborn child in the womb, much less identify the heartbeat at six weeks, show the child sucking his thumb at 15 weeks, or display her eyes, nose, lips, and behaviors with absolute clarity.\u201d CLI linked to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn0.scrvt.com\/64628d2f44eceb2321b00f46924a64d0\/2e62978b5f905e84\/dc265976872a\/MedMuseum_Historical_brochure_Ultrasound.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history on ultrasound advancements<\/a> to illustrate their point.<\/p>\n<p>CLI;s images of ultrasounds before and after Roe are a reminder of why the adage, \u201ca picture is worth a thousand words\u201d holds true:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_268229\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=268229\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-268229\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-268229\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-268229\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture1.png 576w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture1-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture1-500x207.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-268229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of the Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Disturbingly, those pictures of modern ultrasounds also remind us of what we don\u2019t want to remember: fetal pain can also be seen. CLI reminded readers that an outdated 2010 study by Dr. Stuart Derbyshire is oft-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/19\/19-1392\/192267\/20210913143126849_19-1392bs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited<\/a>\u00a0in the abortion industry\u2019s response, and he is considered a\u00a0<strong>\u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/17\/health\/complex-science-at-issue-in-politics-of-fetal-pain.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading voice against the likelihood of fetal pain<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0according to the\u00a0New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>However, as CLI pointed out, \u201cDr. Derbyshire in 2020 published an updated peer-reviewed paper in the British Medical Journal&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jme.bmj.com\/content\/46\/1\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of Medical Ethics<\/em><\/a>\u00a0concluding that the cortex is not necessary for pain perception and that \u2018the evidence, and\u00a0<strong>a balanced reading of that evidence<\/strong>, points toward an immediate and unreflective pain experience mediated by the developing function of the nervous system from\u00a0<strong>as early as 12 weeks<\/strong>.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pictures of the ultrasounds of an in-utero baby before and during anesthetic injection are enough to make us wince with pain, as well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_268230\" style=\"width: 415px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=268230\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-268230\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-268230\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-268230\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"405\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture2.png 405w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Picture2-360x240.png 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-268230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of the Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CLI also pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-links.lww.com\/permalink\/pr9\/a\/pr9_2020_11_25_diandrade_painreports-d-20-0059_sdc1.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this\u00a04D ultrasound video<\/a> of a third trimester baby reacting to an injection of anesthetic prior to surgery in utero, as well as studies from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajog.org\/article\/S0002-9378(12)02082-0\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/uog.13375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obstetrics and Gynaecology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CLI concluded its news release by reminding readers of a powerful reality:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>Medical advances since 1973 make it possible to save extremely premature babies at earlier and earlier ages, making the Supreme Court precedent of \u2018viability\u2019 both outdated and fluid.\u00a0 With the skills of caring physicians and the availability of new science, viability has moved to ever-younger ages, from 24 to 28 weeks in 1973, to 21 or 22 weeks today.\u00a0Just last November,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guinnessworldrecords.com\/news\/2021\/11\/worlds-most-premature-baby-defies-sub-1-survival-odds-to-break-record-681851\">Guinness World Records<\/a>\u00a0named Curtis, who was born more than four months premature (just halfway through a normal pregnancy at 21 weeks and 1 day), as the world\u2019s most premature infant to live to a first birthday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only things that haven\u2019t changed since\u00a0<em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0are Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat party\u2019s advocacy for taxpayer funded abortion on demand until birth,&#8221; Dr. Sander Lee said. &#8220;Follow the science?\u00a0 Absolutely, because science reveals the humanity of the unborn child like never before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently appeared on Face the Nation, where she\u00a0claimed that \u201cscience hasn\u2019t changed\u201d while ruminating on her political views regarding abortion.
