A bill to limit abortion to 22 weeks in Puerto Rico is currently receiving pushback from abortion advocates. In response, pro-lifers have taken steps of their own to raise awareness and advocate for the bill.<\/p>\n

As Live Action News\u00a0previously reported<\/a>, Bill 693, also known as\u00a0“Law for the protection of the conceived child in its gestational stage of viability,\u201d would limit abortion to 22 weeks and it allows for an exception if the life or health of the mother is in danger (even though deliberately killing a preborn child is\u00a0never medically necessary<\/a>). While a 22-week cutoff for abortion is significantly later than laws currently enacted in many other places around the world, the bill has still seen a lot of pushback from pro-aborts, who feel it is too limiting.<\/p>\n

Tal\u00eds Romero is a pro-lifer who is fighting for people to support the bill \u2014 even though she knows it means that the island territory still has a long way to go in the fight for life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs pro-lifers we recognize that life begins from conception, so we know that this bill is not ideal,” she said. “However, it\u2019s the first step towards the regulation of abortion on the island, and that means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

In conjunction with the group Pro-Life Puerto Rico, Romero has launched a campaign called “Rescuing Identity” to drum up support for the bill. The campaign is urging people to email\u00a0emartinez@senado.pr.gov to indicate that they are in support of the proposed law.<\/p>\n

Romero said that the public’s pro-life support is imperative since pro-abortion organizations have inundated the island voicing their opposition to the bill, noting that such pro-abortion organizations have sent over 1,000 emails. \u201cIn Puerto Rico we are risking everything and we need all possible help,\u201d she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As an island territory of the United States, Puerto Rico allows abortion throughout the woman’s entire pregnancy, and it is largely unregulated.\u00a0There are currently no limits on fetal age, no waiting periods, no restrictions on minors or requirements for parental consent, and no other restrictions that would regulate abortion.<\/p>\n

Despite this,\u00a0polling<\/a>\u00a0has indicated that the vast majority of Puerto Ricans living on the island believe abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. Romero and her campaign are counting on citizens to let politicians know that they are in favor of stricter abortion laws.<\/p>\n
