Statistics say no."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A pro-abortion researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2022\/05\/04\/study-shows-an-abortion-ban-may-lead-to-a-21-increase-in-pregnancy-related-deaths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claims that<\/a> banning abortion will result in more deaths among pregnant women, and predicts that if <em>Roe<\/em> is overturned, pregnancy-related deaths (or maternal mortality) will increase by 21%.\u00a0If this is true, we would expect to see that (1) countries with legal abortion would have lower rates of pregnancy-related deaths (maternal mortality Rates &#8211; MMRs) than ones without legal abortion, and (2) legalizing abortion would make the maternal mortality rate go down and banning it would cause it to rise.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is not what the data show.<\/p>\n<p>Angela Lanfranchi et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/Complications-Abortions-Dr-Angela-Lanfranchi-ebook\/dp\/B00V9HE248\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did an analysis<\/a> of the MMRs of countries before and after they legalized abortion. They found:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>[F]or many countries, the link between legal abortion and improved maternal mortality\u2026 is the reverse of what its advocates claim.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Countries that have legalized abortion such as South Africa, India, Nepal, Cambodia, and Guyana have not seen the predicted maternal health benefits. By contrast, several countries that disallow abortion, such as Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Egypt, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Uganda have seen significant reductions in maternal mortality.<sup>2<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Countries that legalized abortion and saw the MMR worsen<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>United States<\/strong>: In 1971 and 1972, before Roe, the MMR in the U.S. was 18.8 per 100,000 live births.<sup>1<\/sup> Since then, the MMR has gone up, not down. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hestat\/maternal-mortality\/2020\/maternal-mortality-rates-2020.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020, the MMR<\/a> was 23.8.\u00a0The MMR in the U.S.\u00a0<em>without <\/em>legal abortion was lower than the rate <em>with<\/em> legal abortion. There are more pregnancy-related deaths today than before Roe. While legalizing abortion may or may not be the <em>cause<\/em> of the rising MMR (deaths from abortion are included in the numbers), it clearly did nothing to lower it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guyana<\/strong>, a developing nation, had a maternal mortality rate of 216 when abortion was illegal. Abortion was legalized there in 1995. By 2015, Guyana\u2019s MMR had risen to 229 per 100,000.<sup>3<\/sup> In Guyana, the MMR increased after abortion was legalized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>South Africa<\/strong>: Until 1996, abortion was legal in South Africa only in cases of rape, incest, fetal abnormality, or health risk to the mother. Then, South Africa passed one of the most permissive abortion laws in the world.\u00a0Shortly thereafter, the MMR, which had been dropping for decades, began to rise. A major study of MMR in the Cape Peninsula, which tracked the MMR from 1953 to 2003, found that it had risen \u201cmarkedly\u201d since the late 1990s.<sup>5 <\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to Lanfranchi et al., \u201cIn 1990 maternal mortality was 108 per 100,000 live births, but by 2015 it was up to 138 \u2013 a rise of almost 30%.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/most-maternal-deaths-are-preventable-how-to-improve-outcomes-in-south-africa-181282#:~:text=The%20rate%20in%20South%20Africa,Confidential%20Enquiries%20for%20Maternal%20Deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2019, it was down to 113\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; still higher than before legalized abortion.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Countries that banned abortion and saw the MMR improve<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Chile<\/strong>: From 1931 to 1988, abortion was legal only to save the life of the mother in Chile. In 1989, it was banned in all cases. If abortion was needed to save women\u2019s lives, the MMR would have gone up. But that\u2019s not what happened.\u00a0In 1980, when abortion was legal to save a woman\u2019s life, Chile\u2019s MMR was 70. By 2008 (when abortion was banned in all cases) the MMR had fallen to only 21.<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>Chile has since loosened its abortion law slightly, allowing abortion in cases of rape and fetal anomaly. Its MMR has been declining steadily for the past two decades, but the decline started when abortion was banned in Chile for any reason.<\/p>\n<p><strong>El Salvador<\/strong> banned abortion in 1998. Before 1998, it had an MMR of 155 per 100,000 live births.<sup>10<\/sup> Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SH.STA.MMRT?locations=SV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its MMR is 46<\/a>&#8211; less than a third of what it was with legal abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicaragua<\/strong> banned abortion in 2006. In 2005, its MMR was 190.<sup>11<\/sup> In <a href=\"https:\/\/knoema.com\/atlas\/Nicaragua\/topics\/Health\/Health-Status\/Maternal-mortality-ratio#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20maternal%20mortality%20ratio,100%2C000%20live%20births%20in%202017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017, it was 98<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poland<\/strong> banned abortion in almost all cases in 1989. <a href=\"https:\/\/knoema.com\/atlas\/Poland\/Maternal-mortality-ratio#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20maternal%20mortality%20ratio,100%2C000%20live%20births%20in%202017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Since then, the MMR<\/a> has gone from 17 to 2.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Countries with legal abortion vs. countries without<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Many poor developing nations with substandard medical infrastructure have higher death rates from <em>all<\/em> medical causes. We must compare countries with comparable levels of wealth and development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chile<\/strong>, with abortion banned except for rape or fetal anomaly, <a href=\"https:\/\/knoema.com\/atlas\/Chile\/Maternal-mortality-ratio#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20maternal%20mortality%20ratio,100%2C000%20live%20births%20in%202017.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has a much lower MMR<\/a> than the U.S., with abortion on demand in most states.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ireland<\/strong>, before legalizing abortion in 2018, had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/countries\/IRL\/ireland\/maternal-mortality-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMR of 5<\/a>,\u00a0 far lower than the U.S., and lower than that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SH.STA.MMRT?locations=GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK at the time (7)<\/a> with legal abortion.\u00a0From 2013 to 2015, Ireland had an MMR of 6.5, and the UK had one of 8.76.<sup>11<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Malta<\/strong>, where abortion is illegal in all cases, and surgery for ectopic pregnancy is allowed on a case-by-case basis, had an <a href=\"https:\/\/knoema.com\/atlas\/Malta\/Maternal-mortality-ratio#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20maternal%20mortality%20ratio,100%2C000%20live%20births%20in%202017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMR of 6 in 2017<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/knoema.com\/atlas\/Poland\/Maternal-mortality-ratio#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20maternal%20mortality%20ratio,100%2C000%20live%20births%20in%202017.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poland, it\u2019s 2<\/a>. Both countries have lower maternal mortality rates than the U.S. and UK, which have legal abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hungary<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/knoema.com\/atlas\/Hungary\/Maternal-mortality-ratio#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20maternal%20mortality%20ratio,100%2C000%20live%20births%20in%202017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has an MMR of 12<\/a> (three times higher than Poland\u2019s and twice as high as Malta\u2019s).\u00a0<strong>Ukraine<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/knoema.com\/atlas\/Ukraine\/Maternal-mortality-ratio#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20maternal%20mortality%20ratio,100%2C000%20live%20births%20in%202017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had an MMR of 19 in 2017<\/a>.\u00a0The <strong>Russian Federation<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1089661\/russia-maternal-death-rate\/#:~:text=Maternal%20death%20rate%20in%20Russia%201970%2D2020&amp;text=In%202020%2C%20the%20maternal%20mortality,by%20more%20than%202.2%20times\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has an MMR of 11.2<\/a>. Abortion is legal and common in these countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mexico<\/strong> allows individual states to have their own abortion laws. A study in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/2\/e006013.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>British Medical Journal<\/em><\/a> found that states with more restrictive laws had MMRs approximately <em>25% lower <\/em>than those with more permissive laws.<sup>13<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Angela Lanfranchi et al. speculated about why countries that ban abortion often have lower MMRs than comparable countries that allow it:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The reality seems to be that countries that do not allow abortion are much more likely to make sustained efforts to improve the quality of care for pregnant women and mothers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>They offer better emergency obstetric care, transportation to emergency obstetric care, delivery by trained birth attendants, education for women, and better postnatal care for mothers and infants\u2026 In short, countries that do not offer abortion on request have a much better record of promoting maternal and infant health than countries that do.<sup>14<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the reasons, it is clear that legalizing abortion does not lead to better health outcomes for pregnant women, and banning abortion doesn\u2019t increase maternal deaths.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cited in Thomas W Hilgers, MD <a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/Fake-Deceptive-Science-Behind-Wade\/dp\/0825309417\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=27MAZEPAPDQZK&amp;keywords=The+Fake+and+Deceptive+Science+Behind+Roe+v.+Wade&amp;qid=1651807424&amp;sprefix=the+fake+and+deceptive+science+behind+roe+v.+wade%2Caps%2C181&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Fake and Deceptive Science Behind Roe v.
