On Monday evening, a leaked draft opinion authored by Justice Samuel\u00a0Alito indicated<\/a> that the Supreme Court might be about to overturn Roe\u00a0v. Wade<\/em>. Unsurprisingly, the media\u2019s spin machine quickly went into\u00a0overdrive. By Thursday, three media outlets \u2014\u00a0ABC News\/The Washington\u00a0Post, Politico, and Fox News \u2014 had all released polls which purportedly show\u00a0strong public support for\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/em>. The ABC News\/Washington Post\u00a0poll found<\/a> that 54% of Americans say Roe v. Wade\u00a0\u201cshould be\u00a0upheld\u201d and the Politico poll found<\/a> that 50% believed Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0\u201cshould not be overturned.\u201d The Fox News poll found<\/a> that 63% thought Roe v. Wade<\/em> should stand.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, each of these three polls contain the same flaws of\u00a0other media polls on the Roe v. Wade<\/em> decision.<\/p>\n

First, they fail to\u00a0explain that Roe v. Wade<\/em> effectively legalized abortion on demand for\u00a0all nine months of pregnancy. This is a policy position that only a\u00a0small percentage of Americans support.<\/p>\n

Second, each of these three\u00a0polls failed to explain what happens if Roe v. Wade<\/em> is reversed. If\u00a0the Supreme Court overturns Roe<\/em>, abortion is not banned.\u00a0Instead, abortion policy is simply returned to the states.<\/p>\n

READ:\u00a0Majority of Americans don\u2019t know what Roe v. Wade actually means<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Indeed, a significant body of polling data shows that strong\u00a0majorities of Americans approve of legal protections of preborn\u00a0children that Roe v. Wade prevents. Since 1996, six Gallup polls all\u00a0showed<\/a> that at least 80% of Americans felt that abortion should\u00a0be “generally illegal” during the last three months of pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Similarly, since 1996 six Gallup polls found<\/a> that 64% of\u00a0Americans thought that abortion should be “generally illegal” during\u00a0the second three months of pregnancy. Other polls have shown strong\u00a0public support for 20-week abortion bans and other gestational age\u00a0limits.<\/p>\n

Overall, these recent media polls on Roe v. Wade<\/em> provide little\u00a0insight about U.S. attitudes toward legal abortion. The media is\u00a0likely trying to influence the Supreme Court\u2019s final decision by\u00a0giving the misleading impression that most Americans support\u00a0permissive policies on the issue of abortion. However, other surveys\u00a0consistently show that many pro-life laws enjoy significant public\u00a0support.<\/p>\n

Indeed, pro-lifers should not be misled or discouraged by\u00a0these media polls and instead should continue their efforts to build a\u00a0culture of life.<\/p>\n
