Jackson Women\u2019s Health,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-overturn-roe-leaked-opinion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the press, Justice Samuel Alito <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/read-justice-alito-initial-abortion-opinion-overturn-roe-v-wade-pdf-00029504\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[T]o ensure that our decision is not misunderstood or mischaracterized, we emphasize that our decision concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right. Nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that didn\u2019t stop politicians across the political Left from making a lot of wild claims to the contrary, regarding privacy rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Key Takeaways:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Biden, Rep. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would represent a \u201cradical\u201d and \u201cfundamental\u201d shift in the rule of law, and would jeopardize other rights. \u201cEvery other decision related to the notion of privacy is thrown into question,\u201d Biden said. &#8220;Who you marry, whether or not you decide to conceive a child or not, whether or not you can have an abortion, a range of other decisions.&#8221; He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS\/status\/1521556444440637441?s=20&amp;t=P-GGDC4FbPqZSN_65bMOEA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> similar ideas on Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The draft opinion calls into question the fundamental right to privacy \u2014 the right to make personal choices about marriage, whether to have children, and how to raise them.<\/p>\n<p>These are fundamental rights for Americans \u2014 a critical part of who we are.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; President Biden (@POTUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS\/status\/1521556444440637441?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His sentiments were echoed and expanded upon by several others. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) released a joint <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/5222-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> elusively alleging: \u201c[T]he Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years \u2013 not just on women but on all Americans.\u201d The legislators did not go into the specifics of which rights might be restricted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, at his press conference on Tuesday, Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois \u2014 where abortion would remain legal regardless of any decision overturning\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> \u2014 went into great detail about supposedly threatened rights, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sEpYNQlvKPM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claiming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It goes far beyond the right to an abortion. It means an end to the constitutional right to privacy. \u2026 It means they can take away the right to birth control and fertility treatments. \u2026 If you think the Republican politicians who have engineered the Court\u2019s reversal of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v Wade<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are going to stop here, let me tell you otherwise. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is just the beginning. Next, they\u2019re coming for marriage equality. Then, they will take away civil rights from marginalized and minority communities.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along the same lines, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1521308650429689857\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cAs we\u2019ve warned, SCOTUS isn\u2019t just coming for abortion &#8211; they\u2019re coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As we\u2019ve warned, SCOTUS isn\u2019t just coming for abortion &#8211; they\u2019re coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin is blocking Congress codifying Roe. In the draft, Alito references the cases of <em>Obergefell<\/em> as well as <em>Lawrence<\/em>, but notes specifically that these decisions are <em>not<\/em> threatened by an overturning of <em>Roe<\/em>, writing that abortion is &#8220;a unique act&#8221; that kills a human being (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Unable to show concrete reliance on Roe and Casey themselves, the Solicitor General suggests that overruling those decisions would \u201cthreaten the Court\u2019s precedents holding. that the Due Process Clause protects other rights.\u201d Briof for United States as Amicus Curiae 26 (citing Obergefell v. Hodges, 576 U. 8. 644 (2015); Lawrence v. for United Statesas Amicus Curiae 26 (citing Obergefell v. Hodges, 576 U. 8. 644 (2015); Lawrence v. Texas, 539 U. S. 558 (2008); Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U. S. 479 (1965)). <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>That is not correct for reasons we have already discussed.<\/strong> <strong>As even the Casey plurality recognized, \u201c[a]bortion is a unique act\u201d because it terminates \u201clife or potential life.\u201d 505 U.S, at 852; see also Roe, 410 U. 8., at 159 (abortion is \u201cinherently different from marital intimacy,\u201d \u201cmarriage,\u201d or \u201cprocreation\u201d). <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>And to ensure that our decision is not misunderstood or mischaracterized, we emphasize that our decision concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right. Nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), meanwhile,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSwalwell\/status\/1521340822989402113\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cThe Republicans won\u2019t stop with banning abortion. They want to ban interracial marriage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Republicans won\u2019t stop with banning abortion. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSwalwell\/status\/1521340822989402113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidentally, one of the Supreme Court justices who reportedly supports the draft opinion, Clarence Thomas, is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an interracial marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these politicians failed to provide any explanation for their dire predictions. None described the means by which any of these threatened outcomes might come to pass, or explained the logic by which they reached their conclusions.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is likely because their arguments are based on fallacy, not logic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, there is no reason to assume the Supreme Court\u2019s decision on abortion will lead to any of the threatened consequences. These politicians are presenting a classic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yourlogicalfallacyis.com\/slippery-slope\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slippery slope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argument, wherein, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.logicallyfallacious.com\/logicalfallacies\/Slippery-Slope\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Logically Fallacious, a \u201cfirst event is suggested to lead to a more significant event, which in turn leads to a more significant event, and so on \u2026 [T]he connection of each event is not only unwarranted but with each step it becomes more and more improbable.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, as Fleet\u2019s &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Informal Logical Fallacies&#8221;<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/slippery-slope-logical-fallacy-1692105\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concludes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthe slippery slope argument is used as a fear tactic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On page 62 of the Supreme Court draft majority opinion on Dobbs v.
