Supervisors in Santa Clara County, California, unanimously voted<\/a> Tuesday to approve a proposal that would give Planned Parenthood Mar Monte $3 million in county funding. The money would be used to reach more women from out of state who want abortions. According to Mercury News<\/a>, the proposal now goes to county administration, who must provide budget recommendations as to where the $3 million will come from.<\/p>\n

In their proposal<\/a> asking the County for taxpayer funds, supervisors Cindy Chavez and Susan Ellenberg argued that Planned Parenthood’s services are “important and\u00a0complementary to the\u00a0health\u00a0services provided by\u00a0the\u00a0County\u2019s health system.”<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that abortion rights are more fragile than they have been in decades in this country,\u201d said<\/a> Chavez. \u201cIn states other than California, lawmakers are increasingly passing strict bans on abortion as the Supreme Court reconsiders the scope and existence of this constitutional right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellenberg took the request for taxpayer funding of abortion a step further, going so far as to liken it to a refugee crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re potentially looking at a humanitarian crisis not unlike other refugee crises worldwide,\u201d she said. She also spoke of the leaked first draft of the Supreme Court decision of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization<\/em>, which appears to overturn Roe v. Wade<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cWhile it was really horrible to see the draft opinion, we had a sense that something like this was coming. And that Santa Clara County needed to be out in front,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Stacy Cross, president of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, says that her organization needs the funding in order to commit more abortions. \u201cWe\u2019re preparing across our affiliate to receive [200] to 500 additional patients a week coming from out of state,\u201d she\u00a0said<\/a>. \u201cAt least 26 states are poised to ban abortion. This current landscape is exactly why Planned Parenthood Mar Monte needs to expand in both size and services.\u201d<\/p>\n
