Today, Governor Kevin Stitt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kktv.com\/2022\/05\/03\/oklahoma-governor-signs-texas-style-ban-most-abortions\/\">signed that bill into law<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oklegislature.gov\/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=sb1503&amp;Session=2200\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 1503<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Oklahoma Heartbeat Act, is modeled after the Texas Heartbeat Act and bans abortions after a detectable heartbeat with an exception for medical emergencies (though abortion is never medically necessary). It does not include any exceptions for rape or incest and includes a provision allowing private citizens to sue anyone who performs or helps a woman obtain an abortion for $10,000. The bill prohibits any civil action against the woman herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just weeks prior to this, Stitt\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oklahoma-abortions-felony\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed into law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a bill that would ban nearly all abortions in the state and make committing them a felony. That law is not slated to go into effect until the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/vRBTT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end of the summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oklegislature.gov\/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=sb612&amp;Session=2100\">Senate Bill 612<\/a> bans nearly all abortions, with an exception only if the mother\u2019s life is at risk. In reality, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-replies-abortion-never-medically-necessary\/\">the intentional homicide of a preborn child is never medically necessary<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These bills have raised the ire of pro-abortion activists who have filed lawsuits with the state court to block the pro-life legislation. The challenge to Senate Bill 1503, Oklahoma&#8217;s Heartbeat Act, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/2022\/05\/abortion-2657243304\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed directly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Oklahoma Supreme Court and the challenge to Senate Bill 612, submitted to trial court, was attached to an existing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-suit-block-oklahoma-pro-life-laws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> challenging five other abortion restrictions enacted last year in Oklahoma, all of which are currently blocked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-campaign-oklahoma\/\">Planned Parenthood retaliates against Oklahoma governor over pro-life legislation<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-first-state-heartbeat-law\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enactment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Texas Heartbeat Act, Planned Parenthood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/about-us\/newsroom\/press-releases\/new-planned-parenthood-data-highlight-the-far-reaching-impact-of-texas-abortion-ban\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a 2500% increase in\u00a0 Texas patients at its Oklahoma clinics. Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said, \u201cThese numbers are staggering and just one part of the devastating picture on the ground in Texas and the surrounding states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Dr. Alan Braid, a plaintiff from Tulsa Women&#8217;s Reproductive Clinic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/2022\/05\/abortion-2657243304\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the GOP&#8217;s wave of anti-choice laws is \u201cdesigned to threaten and intimidate physicians into not providing constitutionally protected healthcare, and force pregnant people to travel hundreds of miles to receive care.\u201d Live Action News has repeatedly debunked the idea that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-not-healthcare-former-abortion-workers-speak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion is health care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But pro-lifers are not backing down. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/28\/politics\/oklahoma-heartbeat-act\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pledged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to sign every piece of legislation limiting abortion that reaches his desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lawsuits emerge just as the nation has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-overturn-roe-leaked-opinion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaked report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Politico<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the U.S. Supreme Court may intend to overturn <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v.
