Less than one month after lawmakers in the House urged<\/a> House Chief Administrative Officer Catherine Szpindor to break ties with Citigroup, members of the Senate are calling on their own to terminate their contract with the banking giant. The call comes as a result of Citigroup’s\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0plan to fund its employees’ abortion-related travel expenses, a policy move that was in response to pro-life laws passed in states like Texas.<\/p>\n

On April 28, a group of Senators led by Sen. Steve Daines of Montana wrote a letter<\/a> calling on the Senate sergeant-at-arms, Karen Gibson, to terminate the Citibank contract that provides credit cards to lawmakers and Senate offices to pay for things like “flights, office supplies, and other goods using taxpayer funds.”<\/p>\n

\u201cCiti\u2019s decision to finance abortion tourism for its employees in brazen circumvention of State law, shows a reckless disregard for the lives of preborn children and disdain for the will of the people of the States in which Citi acts as an employer,\u201d wrote the Senators.<\/p>\n

The Senators also pointed out that it was inconsistent to use taxpayer funds while working with a pro-abortion company like Citigroup.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsistent with nearly five decades of Federal policy against using taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions, taxpayer dollars used by the U.S. Senate should not be administered through a company that facilitates abortion on demand and promotes a woke, pro-abortion agenda,” they wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccordingly, we ask that you immediately terminate the U.S. Senate\u2019s existing contracts with Citi and refrain from entering into any new contractual agreements with Citi.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other signees include Senators Roger Marshall of Kansas, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, Mike Braun of Indiana, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, Rick Scott of Florida, and James Lankford of Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

Citigroup is just one of a growing number of companies that have publicly shown support for abortion through their policies, particularly after states like Texas have passed laws protecting preborn life. Other companies supporting abortion include Yelp<\/a>, Lyft, Uber<\/a>, Salesforce<\/a>, Bumble, and Match<\/a>.<\/p>\n
