{"id":267170,"date":"2022-04-30T13:38:19","date_gmt":"2022-04-30T18:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=267170"},"modified":"2022-05-02T00:42:15","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T05:42:15","slug":"athletic-club-program-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/athletic-club-program-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Athletic club offers special program for young adults with disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The town of Raynham, Massachusetts, is the home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/raynhamathleticclub.com\/\">Raynham Athletic Club<\/a>,\u00a0a business with a big heart for young adults with developmental disabilities that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has begun offering a program designed specifically for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katie Dyer, Raynham Athletic Club\u2019s General Manager, is a certified Group Ex instructor and has coached with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Olympics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 25 years. When asked about the club\u2019s new program, Dyer\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tauntongazette.com\/story\/lifestyle\/health-fitness\/2022\/04\/27\/new-raynham-athletic-club-program-young-adults-developmental-disabilities\/7399974001\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told the Taunton Daily Gazette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI wanted to provide an opportunity for young adults with disabilities to develop their health and wellness in an engaging and fun atmosphere. [This] class allows them to improve skills, learn about different types of exercise, train and develop their communication skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Gazette:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The circuit training session, on Mondays, aims to \u201ctarget different muscle groups with minimal rest in between.\u201d She describes the aqua aerobics session as \u201ca high-energy, low-impact class that gives a total body workout using water as resistance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam Harrington, a 29-year-old with Down Syndrome, participates in RAC\u2019s new program. His mother, Amy Harrington, told the Gazette, \u201cDuring COVID, everything closed down and there was nothing for him to do. And without his regular routine and not having a lot to do, we saw significant changes in his personality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy\u2019s discovery of the new program offered at Raynham Athletic Club was a huge blessing for her son. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a parent, you need to keep them active and get them in some physical activities, because we know people like Adam, people with Down syndrome, can struggle with their weight. But he gets a great workout in that pool,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dyer, the program was designed to \u201coffer engaging, inclusive fitness classes centered around exercise, social interactions and movement,\u201d but it has become life-changing for some participants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caroline Hayes, 21, another participant in the program, found the courage to go completely underwater during one of the Wednesday morning aquatic classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyer recalled the young lady\u2019s experience to the Gazette: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was throwing diving sticks out for them to find. Caroline was on the edge of the pool with her hands on her face, looking anxious. A few minutes later, she ducked herself completely under water and came up with the most amazing smile and joyful facial expression.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was Caroline&#8217;s first time going underwater, but it wouldn\u2019t be her last. \u201cEach week she has continued to go under water successfully,\u201d Dyer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denise Hayes, Caroline\u2019s mother, said, \u201cIt was great to see her do it. She had a huge smile on her face when she came back up. For her, it was a big accomplishment. She was very proud of herself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hayes would love to see other gyms and training facilities begin offering programs that cater to people with
