But once it started down that path, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-planned-parenthood-abortion-corporation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led<\/a> there not by its founder, Margaret Sanger, nor even by a woman. Instead, the corporation&#8217;s decision to begin offering abortions was initiated by one of its male presidents, Alan F. Guttmacher, 1973 (Image credit: WGBH)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the early 1960s, abortion enthusiasts like Lawrence (Larry) Lader <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-population-control-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bemoaned<\/a> Planned Parenthood\u2019s lack of involvement with abortion, noting in his book, \u201cAbortion II,\u201d that \u201cAbortion never became a feminist plank in the United States among the suffragettes or depression radicals. It was ignored, even boycotted by Planned Parenthood women in those days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lader wrote in his book, \u201cIdeas Triumphant\u201d how, other than the National Organization for Women (NOW), few groups were willing to support abortion: \u201cIn medicine, only the American Public Health Association (APHA) had taken a stand\u2026. The huge network of Planned Parenthood Federation clinics remained on the sidelines except for its outspoken medical committee under Dr. Alan Guttmacher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Guttmacher pushes \u201cunlimited abortion\u201d \u2014 for population control<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Despite national calls for coercion to slow down the rate of population growth, Guttmacher advocated \u201cvolunteerism\u201d through the decriminalization of abortion as an effort that he felt would accomplish the same result. In this, the eugenicist leader had shown a skill for finessing rhetoric to accomplish the same goal of population control, but he did not discount the use of coercion altogether.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1817&amp;dat=19660310&amp;id=VW8hAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=R4oFAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=7293,1556940\">1966<\/a>, Guttmacher told the Washington Post that governments may have to act officially to limit families, saying, \u201cIt may be taken out of the voluntary category,\u201d separately <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-prez-alan-guttmacher-population-control-coercion-limiting-births\/\">suggesting<\/a> that coercion would be \u201cstrategically unwise at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo even though the plan [of coercion] may be desirable and would make us a stronger nation, <strong>a less polluted nation<\/strong>, I feel it would be strategically unwise at this time,\u201d the former Planned Parenthood president\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-prez-alan-guttmacher-population-control-coercion-limiting-births\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0Lee McCall, a reporter for the Sarasota Herald Tribune in 1966 (emphasis added).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_172361\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172361\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-172361\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Guttmacher-Compulsory-Birth-Control-1970.jpg\" alt=\"Alan F. He thinks the voluntary movement should set a deadline of 1980. If world population growth has not dropped below 1.5 percent by then, he says, \u2018we\u2019ll have to get tough.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-prez-alan-guttmacher-population-control-coercion-limiting-births\/\"> 1970 Cornell Symposium<\/a>, Guttmacher claimed that \u201cunlimited abortion\u201d was \u201dthe most effective way of reducing population growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Guttmacher\u2019s pro-abortion path<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In 1952, Guttmacher relocated from Baltimore to New York, where he became the first Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mount Sinai Hospital, which had already been approving and committing abortions. \u201cI was told that if a private patient was denied abortion in another institution, she frequently sought abortion at Mt. Sinai because of its well-known, relatively liberal policy,\u201d Guttmacher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlycommons.law.case.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https:\/\/www.google.com\/&amp;httpsredir=1&amp;article=2899&amp;context=caselrev\">claimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By 1962, Guttmacher was at the helm of Planned Parenthood and he was positioned to put his dream of decriminalizing abortion into action. That same year, as chairman of the medical and scientific committee of the Human Betterment Foundation, Guttmacher called the existing abortion laws \u201carchaic\u201d and \u201cidiotic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, during a 1965 \u201cAbortion and the Law\u201d CBS editorial report, Guttmacher, then president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, put forth the infamous \u201chealth\u201d exception for abortion,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commerce.veritone.com\/search\/asset\/18947323\">stating<\/a> (36:20),\u201cNow the law, as you know, is simply to preserve the life of the mother. This is wholly inadequate. Number one, I\u2019d preserve the life or health of the mother. And, as you know, health could be interpreted quite broadly and I think it should be\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Planned Parenthood begins to refer for abortion<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In 1968, Guttmacher founded the Center for Family Planning Program Development, a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\">special affiliate<\/a>\u201d of Planned Parenthood, later renamed The Alan Guttmacher Institute. That same year, under Guttmacher\u2019s leadership, Planned Parenthood\u2019s board approved a resolution to begin calling for the decriminalization of abortion and offering abortion referral services. It was passed the following year.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood\u2019s first abortion facility opened in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ia601005.us.archive.org\/4\/items\/transactionsstud4371coll\/transactionsstud4371coll.pdf\">called<\/a> abortion \u201cfamily planning\u201d in a<b>\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/ia601005.us.archive.org\/4\/items\/transactionsstud4371coll\/transactionsstud4371coll.pdf\">July 1969 speech<\/a>\u00a0in which\u00a0he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ia601005.us.archive.org\/4\/items\/transactionsstud4371coll\/transactionsstud4371coll.pdf\">promoted<\/a> the decriminalization of abortion, saying (emphasis added), \u201cIt is time that we come to grips with<b> two methods of family planning which we have a tendency to skip over in this country. One is abortion<\/b>\u2026 Almost all realize that liberalization of the abortion law is absolutely essential to permit the practice of good, honest medicine, not hypocritical medicine, but honest medicine. Credit: Denver Post (Denver Post via Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Planned Parenthood opens first abortion facility<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of New York decriminalizing its state abortion laws in 1970, Guttmacher\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1970\/04\/11\/archives\/speedy-abortions-favored-in-study-doctors-call-overnight-stay-in.html\">suggested<\/a> that \u201cspecial facilities,\u201d which he called \u201cabortoriums,\u201d should be opened. A New York Magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=BbbuOzD8HHUC&amp;pg=PA67&amp;lpg=PA67&amp;dq=Why+I+Favor+Liberalized+Abortion,+guttmacher&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=_XSgSryx_5&amp;sig=TFjyFmIICLpjyaXKj-X9OkiUTRQ&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjkiLi5zJ7ZAhUFKKwKHYE3BY4Q6AEIRjAH#v=onepage&amp;q=Why%20I%20Favor%20Liberalized%20Abortion%2C%20guttmacher&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0documented how Guttmacher, nicknamed the \u201cdean of abortion faculty,\u201d wanted to \u201crent a loft or store, equip it with surgical equipment and about 20 recovery beds and go into the large scale abortion practice\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On July 1, 1970, Planned Parenthood Center of Syracuse became the first affiliate to offer abortions. The following year, the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1971\/04\/01\/archives\/clinic-here-plans-abortions-for-80-planned-parenthood-to-open.html\">announced<\/a> that Planned Parenthood was set to open an abortion facility in New York. Its executing vice president, Alfred F. Moran, noted that the facility would be a better option from what he called the \u201ccommercial profit-making abortion services\u201d that were operating in the city. He\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1971\/04\/01\/archives\/clinic-here-plans-abortions-for-80-planned-parenthood-to-open.html\">called<\/a> the facility a \u201cprototype for the development of additional centers throughout the city, state and nation and will stimulate the conversion of so-called abortion clinics\u201d into facilities that would also provide comprehensive birth control services.<\/p>\n<p>After the Supreme Court legalized abortion in January of 1973, Guttmacher wasted little time approaching the Planned Parenthood board to offer abortions nationwide According to <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=646mAwAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA141&amp;lpg=PA141&amp;dq=a+survey+conducted+in+1970+by+the+national+planned+parenthood+office&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=Z2QCyRdQTZ&amp;sig=Tzd0ba2wt6SqeR_WS-8ffy6OFV4&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiY5fO3qbbZAhUEL6wKHZKpBokQ6AEINDAB#v=onepage&amp;q=a%20survey%20conducted%20in%201970%20by%20the%20national%20planned%20parenthood%20office&amp;f=false\">author<\/a> Rose Holz, at a February 1973 PP World Population board meeting, Guttmacher insisted that Planned Parenthood begin offering on-site abortions for the poor.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Planned Parenthood has morphed into an abortion corporation. Live Action News has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pianned-parenthoods-past-decade-3-3-million-abortions-6-billion-taxpayer-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> (based on Planned Parenthood\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/89-seconds-planned-parenthood-report-record-abortions\/\">latest annual report for 2019-2020<\/a>) that over the past decade (2010-2019), Planned Parenthood has committed more than 3.3 million abortions and has also received nearly $6 billion from U.S. taxpayers while accumulating $1 billion in excess revenue over expenses.
