The consumer cost for the abortion pill has skyrocketed by over 13% in recent years, all while the industry has simultaneously eliminated costly and potentially lifesaving testing and exams for abortion pill clients. As the amount of money paid by abortion pill clients rises, the abortion industry frequently purchases abortion pills for less than $100, revealing an obvious profit motive.<\/p>\n

Now,\u00a0rather than scold abortion profiteers for gouging their clients,\u00a0newly published research from the pro-abortion group Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH<\/a>), is pointing to these increases as a call for access to taxpayer dollars to finance abortion.\u00a0The study, “Trends In Self-Pay Charges And Insurance Acceptance For Abortion In The United States, 2017\u201320,”\u00a0was\u00a0published<\/a> in an article presented at the\u00a0Virtual\u00a0Annual Meeting of the National Abortion Federation (NAF), May 12, 2021, and funded by ANSIRH. There, the group concluded that the taxpayer and private insurance companies needed to cover more of the cost for pregnant women, all while the abortion industry’s “bucket of money<\/a>” fills up.<\/p>\n

If the abortion pill costs the industry under\u00a0$100, why are clients being gouged?<\/b><\/p>\n

The ANSIRH funded report found that between 2017 and 2020, the \u201cmedian patient charges increased for\u00a0<\/span>medication abortion (from $495 to $560).” Today, abortion pill sales make up the\u00a0majority (54%)<\/a> of all abortions sold in America while<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>he cost<\/a> of the abortion pill regimen \u2014 mifepristone and misoprostol \u2014\u00a0is well under $100 today. In fact, a\u00a0June 2021 report by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF)\u00a0states<\/a>\u00a0that while abortion pill manufacturer \u201cDanco Laboratories does not make the cost of Mifeprex public,\u00a0providers<\/a>\u00a0report that Mifeprex costs them around $90 a pill.\u201d But the cost could be even lower<\/em>, according to the abortion pill pharmacy Honeybee Health, which currently states online<\/a> that “the cost for both medications is $75.”<\/p>\n

Yet ANSIRH’s study claims the industry has increased<\/em> the cost of the abortion pill regimen to their clients by over 13%, from $495 in 2017 to $560 in 2020. And while the cost of the abortion pill rose for women, the industry actually eliminated services for these clients \u2014\u00a0raising the price for consumers while lowering costs and increasing profits for themselves.<\/p>\n

Opportunists cash in while abortion clients get both increased cost and increased risk<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2017, abortion providers offered important lab tests and blood work to rule out dangerous ectopic pregnancies and determine a woman’s Rh factor. But by 2020, the industry had\u00a0rolled out<\/a>\u00a0a \u201cno test<\/a>\u201d abortion pill protocol, eliminating those important tests (and costs) and relying completely on a woman’s or minor’s best guess<\/em>\u00a0as to the date of her last menstrual period and risk of ectopic pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Then, during a variety of lawsuits in 2020<\/a> \u2014 and eventually a 2021 rule change<\/a> by the pro-abortion Biden Food and Drug Administration (FDA) \u2014\u00a0the industry completely eliminated the in-person medical visit requirement and permanently enabled the abortion pill regimen to be shipped by mail, further increasing the savings to abortion profiteers. The industry instituted these changes and quickly moved much of their business to unregulated online spaces<\/a>, reducing their costs even further.<\/p>\n

This means that today, essentially all an\u00a0abortion opportunist<\/a> needs to open an online abortion business is a phone, a computer and a partnership with an online pharmacy<\/a>, enabling abortion facilities to increase profits by eliminating facilities and staff and drastically reducing<\/a>\u00a0the time spent with clients.<\/p>\n

To further demonstrate how cheap it is to operate an online abortion pill dispensary, look no further than recent media interviews with these unregulated online businesses where industry insiders\u00a0openly boast<\/a> that the cost of chemical abortion is low, resulting in large profits \u2014 a fact ANSIRH’s report failed to note.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jamie Phifer, founder and medical director of the online abortion business Abortion On Demand (AOD) acknowledged<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cper patient cost is relatively low\u201d at her business \u2014 so<\/em> low, in fact, that rather than cut the cost to abortion clients, AOD donates \u201c60 percent of our profits to Keep Our Clinics<\/a> of the Abortion Care Network<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

But even brick and mortar facilities like Whole Woman\u2019s Health are\u00a0marking up<\/a> the cost of the abortion pill regimen (which can be purchased for under<\/a> $100) by charging<\/a> clients four to five times more.<\/p>\n

The motive behind ANSIRH’s claim about abortion costs increasing has little to do with a concern for the abortion consumer and is more likely centered on the fact that they want to force the American taxpayer to foot the bill for abortion, which will, as Live Action News has previously<\/a> documented, result in driving up the number of abortions and put greater profits into the coffers of the abortion industry.<\/p>\n
