In a book published this year,\u00a0“A War on My Body, a War on My Rights,”<\/a> several pro-abortion activists weighed in on the Texas Heartbeat Law. Pro-abortion activist Donna Howard claimed:<\/p>\n

Medical science has determined that a true heartbeat does not occur until about 20 weeks gestation; however, cardiac cells are able to emit detectable electrical activity as early as six weeks gestation.<\/em><\/p>\n

This cleverly worded bill not only bans abortions after a heartbeat is detected but includes language specifying cardiac electrical activity as well \u2013 hence, the six-week ban on abortion.1<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n

In fact, the word \u201celectrical\u201d does not<\/em> appear anywhere in the bill. The bill defines heartbeat as \u201ccardiac activity or the steady and repetitive rhythmic contraction of the fetal heart within the gestational sac.\u201d In addition,\u00a0Howard\u2019s claim that “a true heartbeat” doesn\u2019t occur until 20 weeks can easily be disproven by looking in embryology textbooks.<\/p>\n

The medical textbook “Larsen\u2019s Human Embryology”\u00a0states, \u201cThe heart is the first functioning organ in humans. It begins beating rhythmically as early as day 22 and pumps blood by days 24 to 25.\u201d5\u00a0<\/sup>The text has a picture of a preborn baby\u2019s heart taken just 29 days after conception with an electron microscope. As you can see, even at this early stage, six weeks into a woman\u2019s pregnancy, the baby\u2019s heart already has many of its parts.<\/p>\n

In the following video, you can see a preborn baby\u2019s heart beating at just under seven weeks. This footage, from the Endowment for Human Development, was shot by inserting a tiny camera into a pregnant woman\u2019s uterus.<\/p>\n
