Nebraska lawmakers have failed to pass a bill that would restrict abortion in the state should Roe v. Wade<\/em> be overturned. The “trigger bill” failed in the Senate with a 31-15 cloture vote, and even though the majority of 31 were in support of the bill, it was two short of the necessary 33 votes required for the bill to proceed.<\/p>\n

As 1011Now<\/a> reports, the Nebraska Human Life Protection Act, or LB 933<\/a>, would have restricted abortion in the state, making it a felony to provide abortion pills or commit any abortion procedure. The mother undergoing the abortion would not have been charged. The bill would have gone into effect if the Supreme Court decides to overturn Roe<\/em> in its ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization<\/em>, a scenario that some believe is likely. The bill was introduced by Sen. Joni Albrecht, who said<\/a>, “We’re not going to kill babies anymore in Nebraska.\u00a0We’re going to take care of them.”<\/p>\n

The bill drew the ire of abortion supporters, and KETV Omaha reports<\/a> that they packed the Capitol building at one point to oppose the bill. \u201cThis makes Nebraska dangerous to live in as a woman,\u201d Sen. Anna Wishart of Lincoln said.\u00a0The Omaha World-Herald reports<\/a> that Sen. Megan Hunt referred to the bill as “a church bill” brought by “Christian religious extremists.” According to the World Herald, “lawmakers said women may instead seek out ‘back alley abortions’ or other rumored methods that would endanger their lives.” Unfortunately, these lawmakers failed to consider that legalized abortion is incredibly dangerous to women<\/a> and has resulted in deaths<\/a>. And despite the abortion industry’s repeated claims, women were not<\/em> dying by the thousands<\/a> before Roe v. Wade<\/em> made abortion legal in every state.<\/p>\n

According to the Associated Press, 13 states currently have “trigger laws” which will automatically make abortion illegal in their states\u00a0in the event that\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0is overturned, or an amendment is added to the U.S. Constitution that allows states to ban abortion.<\/p>\n

Despite the setback, pro-lifers in the state say they will continue to fight for life.\u00a0“We believe that a mother and her child are worthy of love and support,”\u00a0said<\/a> Sandy Danek, executive director of Nebraska Right to Life, “We will continue our work with education, legislative efforts, and political action until every life is protected and honored in our state.\u201d<\/p>\n
