Illinois lawmakers recently advanced legislation that would make it easier for abortionists to evade accountability. <\/span>According to <\/span>Capitol News Illinois<\/span><\/a>, the proposed law aims to protect abortionists who work in multiple states from facing disciplinary action in Illinois for breaking abortion-related laws in states with abortion restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, if an individual who commits abortions in Illinois is disciplined in a different state for illegal abortion activity, that triggers potential disciplinary action in Illinois as well. But\u00a0<\/span>House Bill 1464<\/span><\/a> would prohibit<\/em> the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation from revoking, suspending, or taking any<\/em> disciplinary action against licensed physicians, nurses, and physician assistants who commit illegal abortions in other states.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill\u2019s sponsor, Rep. Maura Hirschauer, claimed that lawmakers had to move quickly on the bill due to the Supreme Court\u2019s pending decision in the <\/span>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/span><\/i><\/a> case. A ruling is expected from the Court in June, potentially overturning Roe v. Wade<\/em> and allowing pro-life states to ban abortion, or paving the way for pro-life states to enact pre-viability restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gov. J.B. Pritzker<\/span><\/a>\u00a0signed a different bill in December, despite public opposition, to officially repeal the state\u2019s Parental Notification of Abortion Act after House and Senate lawmakers voted to repeal it in October. As <\/span>NBC 5 Chicago<\/span><\/a> reported, state residents electronically submitted nearly 50,000 notices of opposition to the legislation before the October vote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the governor signed the <\/span>Illinois Reproductive Health Act<\/span><\/a> into law in 2019, discarding the state\u2019s ban on the horrific partial-birth abortion procedure and allowing for late-term abortions if an <\/span>abortionist<\/span><\/a> deems it necessary for so-called \u201chealth\u201d reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood officials were on hand at a news conference Thursday with the Illinois House Democratic Caucus to celebrate the passage of HB 1464 in the House in a 68 to 41 vote. The bill now awaits approval in the Senate.<\/p>\n
