A couple aborted<\/a> a healthy preborn baby at six months after learning that the fertility clinic had given them someone else’s embryo.<\/p>\n

According to The Daily Beast, a complaint filed by a woman and her husband in Manhattan this week says that they could have aborted the baby sooner if the New York Fertility Institute had not given them the runaround, telling them that no mistake had been made despite DNA tests proving the baby wasn’t biologically related to them. It is the second time this fertility clinic and doctor have knowingly mixed up embryos. But this type of mistake<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0occurred<\/a> many times in the unregulated fertility industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Defendants have a history of mixing up, mislabeling, and\/or outright losing their patients\u2019 genetic material,\u201d the couple referred to as Mr. and Ms. Doe, claim.<\/p>\n

They underwent three egg retrievals in April 2020 and implanted an embryo in July 2021. Their OB\/GYN recommended genetic testing for the baby to see if there were any chromosomal health conditions present. But those results indicated that Ms. Doe was not related to the baby she was carrying. However, the clinic said this was impossible and suggested Ms. Doe had “mosaicism,” a condition in which someone has two forms of DNA such as from a twin that died in utero and was absorbed by the other twin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis result did not make sense, since Ms. Doe was supposed to be carrying her own embryo,\u201d the suit says.<\/p>\n

An amniocentesis verified that the baby was not genetically related to the couple. According to the lawsuit, “Ms. Doe and Mr. Doe did not know what to do. They had grown to love this baby, who had already begun kicking. On the one hand, they did not want to lose her even if she was not genetically related to them. On the other hand, they could not imagine carrying a stranger\u2019s baby to term, only to potentially lose her in later legal battles to her biological parents, which would be devastating to the entire family.\u201d<\/p>\n

On December 1, 2021, they aborted the baby they claimed to love because they feared the baby’s biological parents might want her.<\/p>\n

The most common abortion procedure at six months is a D&E abortion and involves the direct dismemberment of the child \u2014 tearing her arms and legs from her torso before crushing her skull. Another later abortion procedure called induction abortion involves injecting a drug to cause the child to go into cardiac arrest before a preterm delivery of the stillborn baby is carried out. The baby’s body is then disposed of with medical waste.<\/p>\n
