Lauren Handy, Jonathan Darnel, Jay Smith, Paulette Harlow, Jean Marshall, John Hinshaw, Heather Idoni, William Goodman, and Joan Bell were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/nine-defendants-indicted-federal-civil-rights-conspiracy-and-freedom-access-clinic-entrances\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a federal grand jury in February on Federal Civil Rights Conspiracy and Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/history\/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps\/freedom-access-clinic-entrances-act-1994\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FACE Act)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offenses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-265365\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/US-vs-Lauren-Handy-doc-586x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/US-vs-Lauren-Handy-doc-586x700.jpg 586w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/US-vs-Lauren-Handy-doc-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/US-vs-Lauren-Handy-doc-500x597.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/US-vs-Lauren-Handy-doc.jpg 611w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-count <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/press-release\/file\/1488691\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indictment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alleges that the defendants \u201cdid willfully combine, conspire, and agree with one another \u2026 to injure, oppress, threaten, and intimidate patients and employees\u201d of the Washington Surgi-Clinic in Washington, D.C. on October 22, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/press-release\/file\/1488691\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indictment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the defendants \u201ccreate[d] a blockade to stop the Clinic from providing, and patients from obtaining, reproductive health services.\u201d This was allegedly accomplished by \u201ccommunicating \u2026 in advance,\u201d traveling to D.C. from other states, \u201cus[ing] deception to gather information about and gain access to the Clinic,\u201d \u201cus[ing] force to enter the Clinic, and to obstruct access to and the functioning of the Clinic,\u201d and \u201cbarricad[ing] themselves inside the Clinic\u201d using tools, \u201cincluding ropes and chains.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lauren Handy, and others, got arrested by the FBI today. It is believed it had to do with a Red Rose rescue she participated in two years ago. Patrick Mahoney (@revmahoney) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/revmahoney\/status\/1509205968915161096?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 30, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rescue action in question was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/live\/?ref=watch_permalink&amp;v=420631786000084\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">live-streamed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Facebook by DC Area Anti-Abortion Advocacy. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/press-release\/file\/1488691\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indictment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nurse stumbled and sprained her ankle as a result of the action; however, although the same document alleges that the defendants \u201cdid by force \u2026 intentionally injure \u2026 and attempt to injure\u201d an unnamed \u201cpatient,\u201d no overt acts of violence on their part are described therein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It appears from the live stream that law enforcement arrived quickly on the scene, within minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FDCAreaAntiAbortionAdvocacy%2Fvideos%2F420631786000084%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"429\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of this writing, all defendants except Handy had been released from custody.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/248\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1994, under which the defendants have been indicted, makes it a federal crime to intentionally use force, threats, or physical obstruction in order to intimidate or interfere with a person who is \u201cobtaining or providing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/definitions\/uscode.php?width=840&amp;height=800&amp;iframe=true&amp;def_id=18-USC-568052354-910341877&amp;term_occur=999&amp;term_src=title:18:part:I:chapter:13:section:248\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reproductive health services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also makes it a federal crime to similarly interfere with religious worship services, although it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/special-litigation-section-cases-and-matters\/download#face\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appears<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prosecution under the act has been primarily used against those accused of interfering with abortion facility operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/nine-defendants-indicted-federal-civil-rights-conspiracy-and-freedom-access-clinic-entrances\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If convicted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the defendants could each face up to 11 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $350,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nine pro-life activists were arrested Wednesday morning by the FBI.
