This raid was one of many conducted by the heroic young Christian woman. With her family, she saved more than 800 lives from the Nazis in Holland during WWII before she was sent to a concentration camp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Hiding Place<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the start of WWII, Corrie became the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/corrie-ten-boom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first licensed female watchmaker in Holland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She also was an organizer of youth groups and education groups for fine embroidery. When her country fell under Nazi rule, Corrie\u2019s skills in intricate work and organization were used in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corrietenboom.com\/en\/information\/the-history-of-the-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peaceful resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help the most vulnerable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1942, Corrie, her sister Betsie, and their father hosted in their home the first of over 800 people to pass through their hands. The home was, thanks to Corrie\u2019s knack for organization and ingenious thinking, a uniquely organized space that would prove providential for hiding people \u201ca half block from the main police headquarters.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GHjiGwG4cFY\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leader of the Dutch underground resistance put Corrie in touch with a prominent architect who designed \u201cthe hiding place\u201d \u2014 a special room where five or six people could live undetected for several days. This space was in Corrie\u2019s own room, and she sacrificed much privacy as men and women, young and old, babies and children, passed in and out of the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make her work possible, Corrie had to find her \u201cown resources\u201d for identity papers and ration cards. On one occasion, she found a contact who was willing to let himself be beaten back and blue in order to successfully hide 100 stolen passports. A network of people would then help Corrie transport the Jews to the country where they would then discover a network to help them out of Nazi-occupied lands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the operation grew, Corrie\u2019s resilience and faith grew too. She became emboldened and went to nurses and doctors and other professionals to help her care for the people, some of them pregnant women, who came to her for care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/9-women-pro-life-shaped-built\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>9 amazing women who have built and shaped the pro-life movement<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corrie and her network developed signals, a buzzer system, and a code to prevent discovery. The inhabitants would conduct drills and practice interrogations day and night to make sure they could get to their escape room within time and not betray each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corrie didn&#8217;t just save the lives of those who passed through her door. When she received word that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GHjiGwG4cFY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 Jewish babies<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from an orphanage were to be killed, she facilitated a network of teenage boys to help smuggle the babies to safety. The rescue was successful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Betrayal and Prison<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1942 an acquaintance betrayed Corrie, her family, and fellow workers. All were escorted to prison for interrogation. But the hiding place was never discovered, and all those within made it out safely a few days later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corrie\u2019s father<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corrietenboom.com\/en\/information\/the-history-of-the-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">died<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in prison. Corrie and Betsie<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corrietenboom.com\/en\/information\/the-history-of-the-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endured<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two prison camps, the latter being the notorious Ravensbr\u00fcck concentration camp in Germany. Through all, Corrie was able to miraculously smuggle in her Bible. In the camps, she and Betsie would hold prayer meetings to bolster their fellow inmates at the end of the day. The warmth and love of the ten Boom household radiated hope even in the horrors of the concentration camp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betsie died in Corrie\u2019s arms on December 16, 1944. The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.udayton.edu\/kenrosenzweig\/dcjd\/Minutes\/2001\/min2-01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">next day<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Corrie was miraculously released due to a clerical error: all the other women in her group were gassed a week later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A New Mission<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the war, Corrie fulfilled her sister Betsie\u2019s last wishes and opened<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amightygirl.com\/blog?p=23970\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rehabilitation centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at former concentration camps in both Holland and Germany. These <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cserved both concentration camp survivors and former Nazi collaborators who struggled to find work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe must tell people what we have learned here.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still. They will listen to us, Corrie, because we have been there,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/corrie-ten-boom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betsie insisted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before she died.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgiveness was the key factor and Corrie\u00a0herself only learned it after<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/questionofgod\/voices\/boom.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to forgive a former prison guard who came seeking healing and forgiveness from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corrie embarked on a massive world tour lasting over three decades, visiting over<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corrietenboom.com\/en\/information\/the-history-of-the-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 to share Betsie\u2019s wishes and her own experience that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;God will give us the love to be able to forgive our enemies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the end of her life, Corrie wrote a number of books, the most famous being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hiding-Place-Corrie-Ten-Boom\/dp\/0800794052\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1DVGV2ZOT2WS3&amp;keywords=the+hiding+place+corrie+ten+boom+book&amp;qid=1648671261&amp;sprefix=the+hiding%2Caps%2C84&amp;sr=8-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hiding Place<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was made into a movie in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1975<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and has since been adapted into plays and even a musical. A sequel movie,<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Return to the Hiding Place,&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was released in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corrie also received several notable<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corrie_ten_Boom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: in 1967, Israel named her \u201cRighteous Among the Nations,\u201d and she was knighted by the Queen of the Netherlands for her noble work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corrietenboom.com\/en\/information\/the-history-of-the-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 15th, 1983<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on her 91st birthday, Corrie ten Boom died.
