Bloomberg <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-24\/u-s-employers-add-abortion-travel-benefits-as-states-limit-access\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that companies such as Apple, Hewlett Packard, Bumble, and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/citigroup-plan-pay-employees-abortion-travel\/\">Citigroup<\/a> are creating new abortion benefits for their employees. The new benefits fall in line with their maternity leave policy, with one exception: employers will now cover costs for travel-related expenses if abortion isn\u2019t available in an employee\u2019s state, subverting local laws meant to protect babies who are not yet delivered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move was predictable, after a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/corporate-misogyny-ceos-banning-abortion-bad-business\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 letter from nearly 200 CEOs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called for support for abortion because they believe restricting the homicide of undelivered children \u201cis bad for business.\u201d Since then, the theme of abortion being cheaper than pregnancy benefits \u2014 and therefore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-businesses-pay-abortions-bottom-line\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better for a business&#8217;s bottom line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 has gained steam in media reports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another, more unusual, abortion-related benefit that companies are covering is legal costs. One company, Alloy, says it will cover up to 50% of legal costs up to $5,000 if an employee had to deal with any issues stemming from obtaining an abortion. Texas and Florida recently passed laws that award $10,000 in statutory damages to a petitioner if someone is found to have violated their state abortion law. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/23\/1087202877\/idaho-prepares-to-ban-most-abortions-in-the-state-as-governor-signs-texas-style-\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Idaho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently passed a similar law, awarding up to $20,000 in damages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, Uber and Lyft <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lyft-uber-oppose-heartbeat-texas-planned-parenthood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the creation of a legal defense fund to pay legal fees for any drivers sued under Texas Heartbeat Act\u2019s provisions that anyone who aids or abets a woman in procuring an abortion could be held financially liable \u2014\u00a0although legal experts are divided over whether drivers can be sued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/citigroup-plan-pay-employees-abortion-travel\/\">Citigroup announces plan to pay for employees\u2019 abortion travel<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citigroup announced plans in its March <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-16\/citi-to-cover-staff-travel-for-abortions-as-states-limit-access\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to assist employees to obtain abortions in states with pro-life laws, as Live Action News reported. The travel benefits include coverage for air travel and hotel accommodations for women seeking to end the lives of their preborn children. In response to Citigroup, Texas state representative Briscoe Cain sent a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Briscoe-Cain-Citigroup-Press-Release.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Citigroup demanding that the company cease and desist, and vowed to \u201cintroduce legislation next session that bars local governments in Texas from doing business with any company that pays the abortion-related expenses of its employees or that provides abortion coverage as an employee benefit \u2014 regardless of where the employee is located or where the abortion is performed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies&#8217; decision to add special abortion benefits was hailed by Sue Dunpal, Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles CEO, which partners with one of the companies offering the benefit. Citing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-advocates-debunked-study-denied-poverty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debunked Turnaway Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she told Bloomberg: \u201cWe know who gets left behind and it\u2019s disproportionately women of color, poor women, women who are newer to the workforce or not in salary positions,\u201d said Dunlap. \u201cIt\u2019s the people who are over and over left behind in our systems.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood, founded by noted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/margaret-sangers-eugenic-mentality-alive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eugenicist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Margaret Sanger, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/black-leaders-letter-planned-parenthood-hypocrisy-racism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historically targeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Black community. Recent reports show that Black women account for 38% of reported abortions, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pawns-merchandise-black-women-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highest of any racial group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas\u2019 Heartbeat Act is saving an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/data-texas-heartbeat-act-saving-lives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated 75 lives per day<\/span><\/a>, and statistics currently show that abortions <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/data-show-continued-decline-abortions-texas\/\">dropped considerably<\/a> in the state in the months following the law&#8217;s passage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. states are passing more pro-life laws than ever, and many big companies are expressing their objections to varying degrees.
