(Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/a>)\u00a0Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson today answered, \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d when asked by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) if an unborn child can feel pain at 20 weeks gestation.<\/p>\n

According to modern, peer-reviewed science<\/a>, her answer should have been, \u201cAbsolutely, yes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pro-abortion American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as well as lawyers<\/a> working on behalf of the abortion industry, regularly cite a 2010 Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists report as indisputable evidence against fetal pain prior to 24 weeks.\u00a0 The report was co-authored by Dr. Stuart Derbyshire, one of the world\u2019s leading neuroscientists,<\/strong> who for many years was considered a \u201cleading voice against the likelihood of fetal pain.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

However, after objectively considering the growing body of scientific evidence, Dr. Derbyshire changed his long-held position in 2020<\/strong> and published a peer-reviewed paper in BMJ\u2019s Journal of Medical Ethics<\/em><\/a> concluding that the cortex is not necessary for pain perception, and that \u201cthe evidence, and a balanced reading of that evidence, points toward an immediate and unreflective pain experience mediated by the developing function of the nervous system from as early as 12 weeks.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. David Prentice, Charlotte Lozier Institute\u2019s (CLI) vice president and director of research, had this reaction:<\/p>\n

Judge Jackson is educated in the law, not science, but the correct answer is \u2018yes.\u2019\u00a0 The idea that unborn babies don\u2019t feel pain is rooted in a different era when newborns were strapped down and operated on without anesthesia or pain relief.\u00a0<\/strong>Thankfully, neither science nor humanity have stood still in the 50 years since Roe v. Wade.<\/em><\/p>\n

Unborn babies do feel pain.<\/strong>\u00a0We can actually see this via high-resolution ultrasound during in-utero medical injections when the unborn baby cries and grimaces and squirms just like other kids when they get a shot at the doctor\u2019s office.\u00a0 It\u2019s why fetal anesthesia is now routine and recommended for all surgeries starting at 14 weeks\u2019 gestation.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cScience continues to advance.\u00a0 We encourage the Supreme Court and Judge Jackson to catch up.\u201d <\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
