In another pro-life victory, they tabled a bill that would have \u201censhrined abortion rights in state statute,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/new-hampshire\/articles\/2022-03-17\/new-hampshire-abortion-bills-held-passed-in-late-votes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a win for abortion advocates, lawmakers did remove a requirement that women undergo ultrasounds before abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Wednesday\u2019s showdown lasted till nearly 10 p.m. ET and served as a microcosm for the broader debate over abortion access in the U.S. Americans are currently awaiting the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/em>, which could overturn decades of abortion precedent established by <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas\u2019 own heartbeat bill ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-supreme-court-ends-lawsuit-heartbeat-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survived scrutiny<\/a> at both the Supreme Court and lower court levels \u2013 a move that has effectively eliminated most abortions in the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Democrats have responded to pro-life efforts by attempting to codify <em>Roe<\/em> with state-level and federal legislation \u2013 something the Biden-Harris administration <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/48th-roe-biden-codify-pro-abortion-judges\/\">has enthusiastically supported<\/a>. The federal Health and Human Services Department has also prompted concerns about conscience rights after it <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-doj-drops-vermont-forced-nurses-abortion\/\">recommended against<\/a> pursuing a Trump-era lawsuit that would have challenged the University of Vermont Medical Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doj-sues-vermont-hospital-forcing-nurse-abortion\/\">alleged decision<\/a> to compel a nurse\u2019s participation in an abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-doj-drops-vermont-forced-nurses-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Biden DOJ drops case against Vermont hospital that coerced nurses to participate in abortion<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently pre-empting that type of situation, the New Hampshire House passed a measure allowing health care workers to opt out of participating in abortion or contraception. That bill is headed to the state senate, along with another that eliminates the required 25-foot buffer zone between abortion facilities and pro-lifers outside on the public sidewalks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding to Wednesday\u2019s votes, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England suggested lawmakers were cowering to an out-of-state agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday\u2019s shameful votes are out of step with Granite State values and the will of voters, who overwhelmingly support access to safe, legal abortion and oppose current restrictions on the books already,\u201d said Vice President of Public Policy Kayla Montgomery. \u201cNow is the time for New Hampshire to lead the nation in bodily autonomy, medical privacy, and reproductive freedom &#8211; not cower to an extreme out-of-state political agenda that will harm our residents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Hampshire Right to Life Committee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nhrtl.org\/nhrtl-house-reps-march-session\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">praised legislators<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with president Jason Hennessey saying, \u201cI thank God that the House sided with Life yesterday. Despite a lot of money being spent lobbying to push NH towards abortion extremism, like abortion until birth or continuing to allow healthcare practitioners to be fired for following a religion that forbids abortion, many legislators saw and voted for the truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the state&#8217;s House, the Senate is narrowly in the hands of Republicans who also control the governorship.
