Ever a font of misleading information and <\/span>dangerous<\/span><\/a> propaganda, Ms. Magazine has once more preached a lie-laden sermon to its pro-abortion choir. Erin Grant, deputy director of the <\/span>Abortion Care Network<\/span><\/a>, penned a piece\u00a0arguing that pro-life laws and pro-life violence are closing independent abortion facilities; therefore, we should increase our demonstrations of support for them (though what that might look like is never defined).<\/span><\/p>\n

Putting aside the fact that the closure of child-killing centers \u2013 no matter who runs them \u2013 is always a good thing, her argument is disingenuous at best. Her piece is\u00a0a mish-mash of platitudes lacking a clear thesis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even the title \u2013 “<\/span>Independent Abortion Providers Are on the Front Lines in the Assault on Reproductive Rights<\/span><\/a>\u201d \u2013 is misrepresentative and euphemistic, since abortions always happen after<\/em> reproduction has already occurred. Therefore, restrictions on one\u2019s ability to commit an abortion can never be accurately characterized as an \u201cassault\u201d on one\u2019s right to \u2013 or not to \u2013 reproduce.<\/span><\/p>\n

But that\u2019s just the beginning of the chain of distortions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Recycling the Myth of Pervasive Pro-Life Violence<\/b><\/p>\n

Grant writes, \u201c[P]roviders \u2026 have to \u2026 endur[e] unrelenting threats, violence, and harassment by anti-abortion extremists\u201d; and \u201cproviders, escorts, and volunteers show up every day and put their own health and safety on the line[.]\u201d Both of these statements are ridiculous exaggerations.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Although there have been some noteworthy and deplorable incidents of violence \u2013 including murder \u2013 perpetrated against abortionists, they are few and very far between, and have been denounced by the pro-life movement as a whole. It has been shown that incidents of legitimate violence against abortion workers have been steadily <\/span>declining<\/span><\/a> over the past decades. Even the National Abortion Federation\u2019s own security staffers have been forced to <\/span>admit<\/span><\/a> under oath that most of the incidents they attempt to construe as \u201cpro-life violence\u201d are actually mere trespassing, and are not even necessarily committed with a pro-life motive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, pro-abortion advocates harass, intimidate, and even attack pro-lifers on a regular basis, without a peep from the mainstream media. Escorts at the Bristol Regional Women\u2019s Center in Tennessee, for example, have been known to <\/span>attack<\/span><\/a> sidewalk advocates \u2013 on video. Escorts at the Walnut Creek Planned Parenthood in California have intentionally <\/span>flooded<\/span><\/a> pro-life sidewalk advocates with car exhaust; at the same site, sidewalk advocates have had hot coffee thrown on them, have had their children threatened with rape, and have been physically attacked. <\/span>Others<\/span><\/a> have had their homes vandalized; have been assaulted with knives, guns, and molotov cocktails; have been hospitalized; and have even been murdered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Repudiating Common Sense<\/b><\/p>\n

Grant <\/span>states<\/span><\/a>: \u201cAbortion opponents have weaponized abortion stigma and misinformation to limit access.\u201d She also writes, “<\/span>Not only do these independent clinics have less access to funding and resources, but ideologically-driven, medically unnecessary abortion restrictions make it increasingly hard for many clinics to keep their doors open….”<\/span><\/p>\n

Grant doesn\u2019t specify how \u201cabortion stigma\u201d and \u201cmisinformation\u201d work to \u201climit access\u201d \u2014 likely because the suggestion is absurd, since human beings cannot simply think or feel things out of existence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second statement, however, is a more complicated animal. Grant does not specify any particular restrictions which she believes push independent abortion facilities out of business. However, stories like that of <\/span>Christin Lafo<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 who was given the abortion pill and gave birth to her stillborn 22-week-old son after being told by a certified nurse midwife that she had a non-viable pregnancy at 6 weeks\u2019 gestation \u2013 and <\/span>Markeisha Hemsley<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 who suffered a lacerated cervix, a three-inch tear in her uterus, and massive internal hemorrhaging after a botched abortion performed by a nurse (who desperately tried to conceal her malpractice) \u2014 clearly demonstrate the medical necessity of regulating the abortion industry, whether they like it or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ignoring the Elephant in the Corner<\/b><\/p>\n

In the same statement, Grant manages to simultaneously allude to and dance around an important fact: independent abortion facilities \u201chave less access to funding\u201d <\/span>because Planned Parenthood receives the lion\u2019s share.<\/span><\/i> According to its own 2019-20 <\/span>annual report<\/span><\/a>, Planned Parenthood received over $618 million in taxpayer funding.<\/span><\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood is arguably at least as big a problem for independent abortion providers as pro-life legislation, and a massively larger problem than alleged pro-life violence. What\u2019s more, independent abortionists know this, and even <\/span>discuss<\/span><\/a> it openly on Twitter:<\/span><\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood has also been opening up massive <\/span>mega-facilities<\/span><\/a> over the last few years, many in the immediate vicinity of independent abortuaries, creating a monolithic presence against which smaller facilities cannot compete. This easily accounts for their growing monopoly in the abortion industry \u2013 they currently enjoy over <\/span>41%<\/span><\/a> of the abortion industry marketshare, up from just <\/span>9.5%<\/span><\/a> in 1991.<\/span><\/p>\n

Portraying Scoundrels as Saints<\/b><\/p>\n

There are indubitably abortionists who believe they are helping women by doing what they do, however, there are <\/span>plenty<\/span><\/i> of examples of reprehensible behavior on the part of abortionists, and painting them all with the folk hero brush is at least equally absurd and disingenuous.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grant would have us believe that all independent abortionists provide \u201ccompassionate,\u201d \u201cpatient-centered,\u201d and \u201ccommunity-based care.\u201d Tell that to the victims of <\/span>Kermit Gosnell<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Curtis Boyd<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>LeRoy Carhart<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>Ulrich Klopfer<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 all of whom were independent abortionists. These men, and countless others like them, exemplify the heartlessness and senseless violence that are the defining characteristics of abortion itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

If independent abortion facilities are closing, it\u2019s cause for celebration, not alarm. We must never forget that abortionists kill children for money \u2013 they deserve assistance in finding legitimate employment, but they <\/span>do not<\/span><\/i> deserve a pat on the back for whitewashing unacceptable violence with euphemisms like \u201cradical, community-based care.\u201d What they do is certainly radical, and it\u2019s unfortunately in our communities \u2013 but the only people being shown care are the abortionists themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
