{"id":264120,"date":"2022-03-12T15:26:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-12T21:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=264120"},"modified":"2022-03-13T19:35:14","modified_gmt":"2022-03-14T00:35:14","slug":"beijing-subsidize-ivf-china-population","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/beijing-subsidize-ivf-china-population\/","title":{"rendered":"In China, Beijing moves to subsidize IVF in hopes of boosting population"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After decades of coercive population control schemes \u2014 first a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/chinas-one-child-policy-ranks-among-the-worst-crimes-against-humanity-of-the-last-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-child policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/china-approves-two-child-policy-nothing-has-changed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-child policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has now been \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/china-three-child-population-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relaxed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d to allow for three children \u2014\u00a0China finds itself with a radically skewed gender ratio fed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-loss-5-million-girls-selective-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex-selective abortions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has led to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-slavery-trafficking-fruits-one-child-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plague<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of sex trafficking and slavery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spite of the recent relaxing of restrictions on family size, China\u2019s fertility rate continues to stagnate. It is currently well below replacement level at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SP.DYN.TFRT.IN?locations=CN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> births per female, and has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/countries\/CHN\/china\/fertility-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climbing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a mere 0.18% annually for the last four years. Its birth rate, on the other hand \u2014 the number of births per 1,000 people \u2014 has steadily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/countries\/CHN\/china\/birth-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declined<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over 2% annually for the last four years, and currently stands below average at 10.902.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an effort to counteract these dismal trends, the city of Beijing has moved to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bioedge.org\/beginning-of-life-issues\/ivf\/beijing-to-subsidise-ivf-to-boost-falling-birth-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subsidize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specific assisted reproductive technologies, including in-vitro fertilization (IVF), via its health insurance programs. However, this measure is unlikely to have a significant net effect, given the low success rate of such treatments. IVF, for example, has a mere <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-couples-opt-adoption-ivf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20-30%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> success rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-vitro fertilization in particular has additional caveats beyond its low rate of success. For every child born via this method, countless others are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dehumanizing-language-ivf-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discarded<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or are left frozen indefinitely, making IVF a very costly procedure in human terms \u2014\u00a0not to mention the financial expense. Children born via IVF also face a host of unique physical and psychological <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sad-confusing-ivf-physical-psychological-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, further complicating this assisted-reproduction gambit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/3-things-plummeting-birth-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>These 3 things could be contributing to the plummeting U.S. birth rate<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, some cheered the news from Beijing. Share prices of various Chinese fertility clinics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/supchina.com\/2022\/02\/22\/reproductive-clinics-benefit-as-china-incentivizes-higher-fertility-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the wake of the announcement. Some individuals likewise responded favorably; Beijing resident Luo Yanan told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixthtone.com\/news\/1009735\/amid-fewer-births%2C-beijing-adds-fertility-treatments-to-insurance-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sixth Tone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she spent over 50,000 yuan on unsuccessful IVF procedures last year. Nonetheless, she intends to try again, and is happy it will be covered by insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zhou Fang, on the other hand, has spent nearly 400,000 yuan on IVF. \u201cFor families like mine, having no baby would mean the end of our marriage,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a disaster.
