{"id":263625,"date":"2022-03-03T08:50:16","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T14:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=263625"},"modified":"2022-03-02T13:34:21","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T19:34:21","slug":"study-nearly-half-morally-opposed-abortion-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-nearly-half-morally-opposed-abortion-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Nearly half of those morally opposed to abortion would still help a loved one to get one"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.abj5851\">analysis<\/a> sheds light on the moral ambiguity in some Americans\u2019 opposition to abortion, as many would help a friend or close relative obtain the procedure despite opposing it on moral grounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More specifically, over 40% of those morally opposed to abortion would help make arrangements for a friend or close relative while only six percent would help pay for the procedure. An even higher number \u2013 76% \u2013 of those morally opposed said they would provide emotional support to those obtaining abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers cautioned against accusing participants of hypocrisy, instead describing them as encountering a \u201cmoral crossroads.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt first blush, these people may appear as hypocrites,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/news-publications\/news\/2022\/february\/large-numbers-of-americans-morally-opposed-to-abortion-would-sti.html\">said<\/a> Sarah Cowan, NYU sociology professor and lead author on the study. \u201cThey are not. They are at a moral crossroads, pulled by their opposition to abortion and by their inclination to support people they care about.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That data came from the 2018 General Social Survey (GSS) but the authors also probed 74 in-depth interviews from the National Abortion Attitudes Study in 2019. That informed the researchers\u2019 view of \u201cdiscordant benevolence,\u201d which refers to the willingness to help despite conflicts with personal values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-destroyed-life-later-hearling\/\">Abortion almost destroyed her life, but a year later, she found healing<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYU\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/news-publications\/news\/2022\/february\/large-numbers-of-americans-morally-opposed-to-abortion-would-sti.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">release read<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cThree logics dominate: one, a view that friends or family members are worthy of help despite imperfections; two, that friends and family constitute an exception precisely because they are friends\/family; and three, that friends or family members make independent moral decisions.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three logics\u2014which the researchers name \u2018commiseration,\u2019 \u2018exemption,\u2019 and \u2018discretion,\u2019 respectively\u2014facilitate discordant benevolence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The findings echo discussions over Americans supporting legal access to abortion despite being personally pro-life. Entities within the pro-life movement, such as pregnancy centers, have supported counseling for pre- and post-abortive women but do not endorse abortion itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our service is not contingent upon what choice she makes,&#8221; Houston Pregnancy Help Center CEO Sylvia Johnson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/faith-values\/texas-pro-life-charities-post-roe-world\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously told Fox News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;We\u2019re going to serve her if she continues the pregnancy, and we\u2019re going to serve her if she decides to terminate the baby. We\u2019re not going to pay for the abortion and we\u2019re not going to refer her to an abortion clinic.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;But if she chooses to terminate her pregnancy, that does not stop us from helping her maybe with her other children, maybe in the future \u2014 that\u2019s who we are,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That\u2019s our heart.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popular pro-life slogan \u201cLove them both\u201d also underscores the imperative the movement places on assisting mothers dealing with unplanned pregnancies.
