As the nonprofit law firm explained on its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thomasmoresociety.org\/abortion-funds-to-face-pre-suit-discovery-over-violations-of-the-texas-heartbeat-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">webpage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, directors of the Lilith Fund for Reproductive Equity and the Texas Equal Access Fund admitted in court that their organizations helped to fund the abortion of at least one preborn child with a detectable heartbeat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/TX\/text\/SB8\/id\/2395961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB 8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a person who aids or abets an abortion after a heartbeat is detectable can face a fine of up to $10,000 in statutory damages. Speaking with Live Action News, President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Society, Tom Brejcha, said their goal is to put these people under oath in front of a court reporter and find out what the facts are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf they are funding abortions in violation of the Texas Heartbeat Law, they can be held accountable,\u201d Brejcha said. \u201c&#8230;This is an attempt to see whether there are violations and, if so, seek accountability. In other words, it\u2019s not just a toothless statement or aspirational ideal. It\u2019s an applicable and effective law with teeth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/data-texas-heartbeat-act-saving-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New data show Texas Heartbeat Act is saving 75 lives per day<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its reporting on the development, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/02\/23\/texas-abortion-sb8-lawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas Tribune<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">referred to the pre-suit filings as a \u201csignificant escalation on the part of abortion opponents, who have so far seemed satisfied with the chilling effect that even just the threat of lawsuits has had on abortion providers and their affiliates.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as Brejcha noted, the law was always intended to be more than just a scare tactic.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is our step to say \u2018no,\u2019 we want to make sure that this law is enforced,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the first step in that direction, and where the chips will fall\u2026we\u2019ll see. Let\u2019s find out the truth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brejcha went on to emphasize that his group is taking action because human lives are at stake. \u201cThis is not just an academic exercise; it\u2019s not just a debate,\u201d he said. \u201c&#8230; People are taking seriously that this is not something to trifle with; we\u2019re talking about killing innocent human beings.
