New Zealand\u2019s government is rolling out a nationwide telehealth service with the ultimate goal of expanding abortion access and providing clinical consultations over the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Associate Health Minister Dr. Ayesha Verrall announced the free service on Wednesday, indicating that it would fill gaps where more localized health boards don\u2019t offer abortion telehealth services.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone should be able to access abortion information and care when they need it,\u201d Verrall said in a press release<\/a>. \u201c\u201cThe national telehealth service is part of wider improvements to abortion provision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dubbed \u201cDecide,\u201d the service is funded by the nation\u2019s health ministry and operated in part by Family Planning New Zealand, which boasts accreditation from International Planned Parenthood Federation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new service comes amid a broader debate about telehealth abortions, which have been defended as avenues for women facing legal or pandemic-related restrictions. According to recent preliminary findings<\/a> from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, the pill comprised 54%<\/a> of U.S. abortions in 2020. Demand for so-called \u201cself-managed abortions\u201d has also increased in Europe during the pandemic, a <\/span>2021 study<\/span><\/a> co-authored by Dr. Rebecca Gomperts of Aid Access reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verrall noted that New Zealand\u2019s government \u201clifted some of the funding restrictions on abortion medication, which enabled a wider range of health practitioners like GPs and nurses, to prescribe them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) similarly deregulated telemedicine abortions by allowing women to obtain mifepristone without an in-person dispensing requirement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Verrall clarified in Wednesday\u2019s release that \u201cin-person care will always be offered, but it\u2019s important that other options are available as well where suitable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTelehealth makes it easier for people to reach the services and support that already exist, particularly those who find it difficult to visit a doctor or clinic,\u201d Verrall said. \u201cIt also gives assurance to health practitioners that their patients have additional sources of support.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But pro-life advocates have warned that telemedicine abortions increase the risk of complications<\/a> by overlooking key information<\/a> usually found during in-person visits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While data on the abortion pill is somewhat limited, studies have indicated that the practice results in at least some complications. For example, a 2009 study from Finland<\/a> concluded that compared to surgical abortions, the chemical form saw a four-fold higher rate of adverse events<\/a>. A study<\/a> from the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Institute also found<\/a> a higher rate and faster increase in \u201cabortion-related\u201d ER visits for chemical abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finland\u2019s study offered a more comprehensive sample than the FDA, which relies on a highly criticized adverse events reporting system. In dispensing with the in-person requirement, Acting Commissioner Janet Woodcock has said<\/a> existing literature didn\u2019t appear to show an increase in safety concerns \u2013 such as ectopic pregnancies \u2013 when the requirement was modified during the pandemic. <\/span><\/p>\n

New Zealand Family Planning similarly <\/span>describes<\/span><\/a> both the abortion pill and surgical abortions as \u201cvery safe\u201d with \u201cvery rare\u201d complications.<\/span><\/p>\n
