If confirmed, Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>News broke early Friday morning that Biden would be announcing his pick, and by mid-morning he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/potus\/status\/1497225829566324741?s=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0that he nominated Jackson, calling her &#8220;one of our nation\u2019s brightest legal minds,&#8221; and adding that she will be &#8220;an exceptional Justice.&#8221; Biden and Jackson are both due to deliver remarks about the nomination later this afternoon from the White House.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m proud to announce that I am nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court. Circuit, she is one of our nation\u2019s brightest legal minds and will be an exceptional Justice.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iePvhz1YaA\">https:\/\/t.co\/iePvhz1YaA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Nzqv2AtN8h\">pic.twitter.com\/Nzqv2AtN8h<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; President Biden (@POTUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS\/status\/1497225829566324741?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Jackson graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in 1992 and then attended Harvard Law School, where she graduated cum laude in 1996. Her legal career is unusual for Supreme Court justices; after graduation, she attended three federal clerkships, one of which was to Justice Breyer on the Supreme Court, and she also worked in a Washington, D.C. private law firm. But from 2005 to 2007, she worked as a public defender; the last Supreme Court justice to spend significant time representing criminal defendants was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnesotalawreview.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Crespo_Online1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thurgood Marshall<\/a>, who retired in 1991. Currently, she sits on Washington, D.C.&#8217;s federal appellate court.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson has never ruled on a case dealing with abortion, however, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Brown%20Jackson%20Responses1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously asked<\/a> if prior Supreme Court cases such as\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0were correctly decided, she declined to answer. &#8220;As a sitting federal judge, all of the Supreme Court\u2019s pronouncements are binding on me, and under the Code of Conduct for United States Judges, I have a duty to refrain from critiquing the law that governs my decisions, because doing so creates the impression that the judge would have difficulty applying binding law to their own rulings,&#8221; she replied. &#8220;Consistent with the positions taken by other pending judicial nominees, it is my testimony that it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the merits or demerits of the Supreme Court\u2019s binding precedents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-best-choice-suicide-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Her friends said abortion was the best choice. Instead, it resulted in a suicide attempt.<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, Jackson did <a href=\"https:\/\/casetext.com\/case\/mcguire-v-reilly-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">write an amicus brief<\/a> in support of NARAL and other pro-abortion organizations, in support of a law to ban pro-lifers from gathering outside of abortion facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood quickly expressed its excitement over Jackson&#8217;s nomination, as well as optimism that she would work to protect abortion. &#8220;Some GOOD news!!&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPact\/status\/1497232568747536389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood tweeted<\/a>. &#8220;Judge Jackson is making history.
