Nico has Down syndrome, and he has quickly become an important part of Meyers Taylor&#8217;s mission to succeed. I just wanted to show it\u2019s possible. It\u2019s possible to compete at the highest level at 37 years old,\u201d she recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/elanameyerstaylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote on Instagram<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s possible to have a baby and come back from pregnancy and continue competing. It\u2019s possible to do extended breastfeeding and physically perform better than most in the works. It\u2019s possible to travel the world with your family, including a baby, and win races. It\u2019s possible to parent a child with special needs and continue to chase your dreams. It\u2019s not easy \u2013 there\u2019s definitely moments of doubt and extreme highs and lows \u2013 but it\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With each medal she won in the 2022 games for bobsledding, she was clear: they were all for Nico. \u201cToday I will tell Nico that his mom fought hard, and she did everything she could to bring this medal home to him,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcolympics.com\/news\/elana-meyers-taylor-mission-2022-winter-olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she said<\/a> after winning silver in the women&#8217;s monobob event. \u201cThis is definitely the most difficult medal I&#8217;ve ever earned. It&#8217;s definitely been the hardest journey to get here. I am so excited to take this medal back to my son at the hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nfiI7eKPgn0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meyers Taylor is still breastfeeding Nico, so she was able to bring him with her to the games, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Part of her inspiration for bringing him was also to send a lesson to the athletic community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, we will really reach equity in sports when a woman can come back from having a baby and completely fail, and fall on her face \u2013 and that\u2019s completely OK. Hopefully by me competing, we\u2019re starting to show that &#8230; mothers can go after their dreams and still figure out how to make it work, while being a mother as well. I don\u2019t want you to be limited based off your desire to have a family.\u201d she said, adding, &#8220;I know it\u2019s not realistic for all athletes. I just want women to have the option. I want them to be able to choose and not be limited by whatever people think &#8230; Just by getting here, we\u2019re showing it\u2019s possible to perform at a high level and be a mother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Meyers Taylor fell short of winning Olympic gold, and it devastated her. Now, she says her mindset is much better. &#8220;As much as I still want the medals, it&#8217;s not all about the medals,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/elana-meyers-taylor-falls-short-of-olympic-gold-finds-something-more-valuable-along-the-way-212526175.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she told Yahoo! Sports<\/a>. Instead of stressing over the gold, she told herself to just enjoy the journey, and she did \u2014 she said she cherished every moment she had left, as this is likely her last Olympic games. She was also voted to be the flag bearer for Team USA in the 2022 Olympics closing ceremony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FElanaMeyersTaylor%2Fvideos%2F268955212032198%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"591\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With her bronze medal in the two-woman bobsleigh, Meyers Taylor earned five medals overall, making her the most decorated woman Olympic bobsledder of all time, and the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympics history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is overwhelming,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/19\/sport\/elana-meyers-taylor-most-decorated-black-athlete-winter-olympics-history-spt-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she told CNN<\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s so crazy to hear that stat and to know that I&#8217;m part of a legacy that&#8217;s bigger than me. Hopefully it just encourages more and more black athletes to come out to winter sports and not just black athletes, winter sports for everybody. We want everybody to come out, regardless of the colour of your skin. We want winter sports to be for everybody, regardless of race, regardless of socio-economic class. I think the more diversity we have, the stronger our sport can be. So hopefully this is just the start of more and more people coming out and trying winter sports.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meyers Taylor is one of many notable examples of mothers who are also elite athletes, and who stand in opposition to female athletes who say they <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/500-female-athletes-oppose-15-week-protections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">need abortion to succeed<\/a>. But instead of advocating for abortion, other athlete-mothers have used their experiences to push for better treatment, like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/7-quotes-power-motherhood-olympic-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allyson Felix<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/onherturf.nbcsports.com\/2021\/08\/04\/track-and-field-legends-discuss-balancing-pregnancy-with-athletic-greatness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alysia Monta\u00f1o<\/a>, or to inspire other women, like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/olympics-star-kerri-walsh-jennings-born-babies-play-volleyball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kerri Walsh Jennings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/serena-williams-writes-touching-post-preborn-child-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serena Williams<\/a>, and Meyers Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>Felix, the most highly decorated female Olympic medalist in track and field, pushed Nike to implement a more inclusive and supportive maternity policy in 2019, as did Monta\u00f1o, who competed in the 2014 Olympics at eight months pregnant. Williams and Walsh Jennings both won major awards while pregnant;\u00a0Williams won the US Open and Walsh Jennings won the gold in the 2012 Olympics \u2014 while Meyers Taylor is one of many examples of athletes competing while also raising young children.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Meyers Taylor has said she&#8217;s looking forward to being a full-time mom to Nico, and whether or not she will return to competing. &#8220;I&#8217;m going to take some time to really think about this,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s going to be really hard to top this Olympics.
