The bill restricts abortion to the first 15 weeks of pregnancy except in cases in which the mother&#8217;s life is considered to be in danger (though abortion is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-never-medically-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never medically necessary<\/a>) or when the preborn child is given a diagnosis considered fatal (abortion in these instances are an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-expectation-pressuring-parents-prenatal-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">act of eugenics<\/a>). Killing a preborn child because she was conceived in rape or incest is discriminatory and does nothing to help her mother heal from the trauma of sexual assault. Rather, it is an additional violent trauma the mother will suffer.<\/p>\n<p>Though any restriction on abortion is a pro-life victory, the ultimate goal is for abortion to be completely criminalized. Pro-life Florida legislators had the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/florida-politicians-15-week-abortion-puzzling-misguided\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opportunity<\/a> to introduce a bill that would have restricted abortion when a preborn child&#8217;s heartbeat is detectable at about six weeks, however, they decided to introduce the 15-week restriction instead, which will save far fewer lives than a heartbeat restriction would have. The Florida bill will now head to the full Senate for a vote.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2\/21\/22<\/strong>: Joining the ranks of other states passing pro-life legislation, the Florida House has passed a bill that would ban abortions after 15 weeks.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/5\/BillText\/c1\/PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passed by a vote of 78-39, and was sent to the Senate where it is expected to pass and be sent to the desk of Governor Ron DeSantis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill states that \u201ca physician may not perform a termination of pregnancy if the physician determines the gestational age of the fetus is more than 15 weeks\u201d and bears similarities to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/time-supreme-court-overturn-roe-chance-will\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mississippi law currently before the consideration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Supreme Court. The bill provides exceptions for the physical health or safety of the mother, or in the case of severe fetal abnormality, but not in cases of rape or incest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill supporter Rep. Dana Trabulsy spoke of how she had had an abortion and \u201cregretted it everyday since.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is the right to life,\u201d she stated, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-supreme-court-health-florida-legislature-state-legislature-e1f570d62ce2c1aea190ac04951c0417\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the AP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cand to give up life is unconscionable to me.\u201d But others disagreed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a woman it is my right to make decisions about my body and what is in the best interest of my family,\u201d said Rep. Robin Bartleman. \u201cGod forbid your 11 year old is raped and pregnant and you find out after 15 weeks, you don\u2019t get to get your daughter that abortion, that\u2019s what this law says.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the latter hours of the session and prior to the final vote on the bill, protesters had been bussed in, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2022\/02\/16\/florida-house-debates-ban-on-abortion-for-15-week-pregnancies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WPLG Local 10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, interrupting proceedings and leading House Speaker Chris Sprowls to call a temporary recess. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2022\/02\/17\/25-abortion-rights-protesters-banned-from-florida-capitol-for-one-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampa Bay Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, police report that 25 abortion activists were banned from the House for one year, and 30 people total were removed from the premises. One Planned Parenthood Affiliate member, organizing director Lauren Brenzel, was arrested for giving false identifying information to police. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FBSaunders\/status\/1494173576257232896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1494175559802368001%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es2_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2022%2F02%2F17%2Fflorida-house-passes-gop-15-week-abortion-ban%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Videos of the disruption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, consisting of abortion activists chanting \u201cmy body, my choice,\u201d appeared on Twitter shortly thereafter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Capitol Police and staff are ordering protesters to exit the House Chamber. <\/p>\n<p>They began chanting as lawmakers readied to vote on the 15-week abortion ban. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XsvSnYLKlw\">pic.twitter.com\/XsvSnYLKlw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jason Delgado (@byJasonDelgado) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/byJasonDelgado\/status\/1494175226774671364?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the aftermath of the bill\u2019s passage, abortion supporters condemned the legislation. Opponents claimed that 15 weeks is still too soon for a woman to know that she\u2019s pregnant, an objection more commonly heard around six- or eight-week abortion bans. Additionally, an associate medical director with Planned Parenthood, Dr. Samantha Deans, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/17\/1081450530\/florida-house-abortion-ban\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that fetal anomalies aren\u2019t detected until 15 weeks. \u201cYou cannot perform an amniocentesis until the second trimester,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd generally speaking, we don&#8217;t perform amniocentesis until 16 to 20 weeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/devastating-cost-wildly-inaccurate-prenatal-screening\/\">The devastating cost of wildly inaccurate prenatal screening tests<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While amniocentesis \u2013 an invasive, diagnostic genetic test that involves using a long needle to take a sample of amniotic fluid to screen for genetic conditions \u2013 isn\u2019t done on a routine basis absent indications, many providers have pressured parents to abort when much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/95-percent-cystic-fibrosis-prenatal-screening-aborted\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0tests and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pressured-abort-decimal-point-down-syndrome-misdiagnosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other screenings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have come back positive for a variety of conditions. In some cases the pressure has been so intense that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/royal-college-dont-pressure-abortion-prenatal-screenings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a whole country\u2019s leading professional organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released directives instructing doctors <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pressure parents into an abortion if their preborn child tested positive for Down syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, Florida lawmakers expressed their support of the bill. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a great bill. I think it&#8217;s a good step forward. I actually approve of and support an even pro-life bill. But this is a really good step forward and it&#8217;s going to save the lives of unborn children,&#8221; Rep. Anthony Sabatini told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wesh.com\/article\/floirda-house-approves-abortion-ban\/39119526#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WESH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in the year, Governor DeSantis signaled his support of pro-life measures. \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of pro-life legislation.
