As the emergency COVID-19 legislation that introduced these changes is <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/876740\/30032020_The_Abortion_Act_1967_-_Approval_of_a_Class_of_Places.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set to expire<\/a> at the end of this March, MPs have taken to social media to speak in favour of this happening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c\u2026it should expire at the end of March as Ministers said that it would\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Influential Wycombe MP, Steve Baker, who is deputy chair of the COVID Recovery Group of Conservative MPs, addressed the legislation on Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveBakerHW\/status\/1494281787702497282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing<\/a>: \u201cTemp Covid regs for at home abortion pills will expire on 25 March. Ministers are right to let them expire; I\u2019ve heard officials are resisting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Emphasising the dangers around \u2018DIY\u2019 abortion, and the lack of consideration the legislation has been given, Mr Baker went on to write: \u201cThere are serious implications to continuing at home abortion that need real consideration such as the coercion of vulnerable women\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Temp Covid regs for at home abortion pills will expire on 25 March.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers are right to let them expire; I&#39;ve heard officials are resisting.<\/p>\n<p>There are serious implications to continuing at home abortion that need real consideration such as the coercion of vulnerable women.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Steve Baker MP FRSA \ud83d\uddfd (@SteveBakerHW) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveBakerHW\/status\/1494281787702497282?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Mr Baker was joined on Twitter by Congleton MP and Co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group, Fiona Bruce, who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RightToLifeUK\/status\/1494345270611558407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cParliament returns from recess next week, and as the Government ends the emergency measures introduced at the beginning of the pandemic, it must revoke the temporary \u2018at-home\u2019 abortion policy which poses unacceptable risks to women\u2019s health and safety\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/government-confirms-diy-home-abortion-always-intended-to-be-a-temporary-measure\">own words<\/a> on the matter, she wrote: \u201cThe Government promised this would be a temporary, time-limited policy, and so it should expire at the end of March as Ministers said that it would\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Blackpool South MP Scott Benton joined them, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ScottBentonMP\/status\/1494301550805716992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeting<\/a>: \u201c\u2018At-home\u2019 abortion leaves women open to abuse through the lack of in-person consultation \u2013 it needs to end as originally promised by the end of March. Scott Benton MP \ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7\ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc65\udb40\udc6e\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc7f \ud83c\udf4a (@ScottBentonMP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ScottBentonMP\/status\/1494301550805716992?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u201cHuge risks around coercion and abuse\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carla Lockhart MP, also Co-Chair for the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group, similarly wrote of the many dangers of \u2018DIY\u2019 abortion in an opinion that was published this afternoon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/mps-comment\/2022\/02\/17\/its-time-to-protect-womens-health-and-safety-by-ending-at-home-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stating<\/a> \u201cseveral reasons\u201d the policy ought to be revoked.<\/p>\n<p>She first mentioned the risk associated with the lack of medical certainty of the baby\u2019s gestational age, stating: \u201cAs there is no legal requirement for medical certification of gestational age through ultrasound or in-person consultation, and no in-person medical supervision during the abortion, there is no guarantee over who takes the pills, when or where they are taken, or whether an adult is present given the risk of complications\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Citing a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/off-limits-is-abortion-being-revolutionised-12222201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky News documentary<\/a>, she went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/mps-comment\/2022\/02\/17\/its-time-to-protect-womens-health-and-safety-by-ending-at-home-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlight<\/a> that \u201c5% of women who have \u2018at-home\u2019 abortions will suffer complications that may need follow-up treatment or surgery, equating to around 96 women every week, or 14 women per day\u201d,\u00a0 and that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19888037\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6156848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">show<\/a> more complications from medical than surgical abortions\u201d even though medical complications likely being underreported.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Carla Lockhart, wrote of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/mps-comment\/2022\/02\/17\/its-time-to-protect-womens-health-and-safety-by-ending-at-home-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">huge risks<\/a>\u201d around coercion and abuse, which given the lack of in-person medical oversight, means \u201chere is no guarantee that a woman taking medical abortion pills is doing so out of her own free will, nor that she is fully informed of her options\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More than 10,000 women had to receive hospital treatment following the use of medical abortion pills in England<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study emerged last year that suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/over-10000-women-needed-hospital-treatment-after-using-abortion-pills\">more than 10,000 women<\/a> had to receive hospital treatment following the use of medical abortion pills in England between April 2020 and September 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Based on data collected from 85 Freedom of Information requests to NHS Trusts across England, the study suggests that more than 1 in 17 women who had a medical abortion over the 18-month period needed hospital treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Dr Calum Miller, NHS doctor and research associate at the University of Oxford specialising in abortion policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/large-turnout-of-mps-hear-evidence-from-experts-on-dangers-of-diy-abortions\">presented evidence<\/a> of the dangers of \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortion to MPs, especially the problem of coercion and abuse facilitated by \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortions.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of direct medical supervision is a significant threat to the substantial minority of women who undergo forced abortion in breach of their human rights, often as a result of sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting several sources, Dr Miller <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/large-turnout-of-mps-hear-evidence-from-experts-on-dangers-of-diy-abortions\">noted<\/a> that \u201cabusers might be listening in on [telemedicine phone consultation] conversations\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp2024046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>); \u201cConsultations, when possible, are offered online, which may introduce further barriers to accessing support\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ruleoflaw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Thematic-Brief-on-COVID-19-EN-ver.21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Office of Drugs and Crime<\/a>); and some women\u2019s \u201cliving arrangements may not permit the privacy and confidentiality appropriate for patient care\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2770536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of the American Medical Association<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said: \u201cThe fact that the Government hasn\u2019t ended this policy yet is mind boggling.
