It\u2019s not every day that a country\u2019s president walks a young child to school, but that\u2019s what happened to 11-year-old Embla Ademi early February.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Embla has Down syndrome, and her parents told President Stevo Pendraovskin that she had faced bullying and harassment at her local elementary school. In order to highlight her plight \u2014 and the rights of all children to an education \u2014\u00a0he walked with Embla and her parents to from their home in the North Macedonian city of Gostivar to her elementary school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the President\u2019s <\/span>media release<\/span><\/a>, he spoke with her parents about how they have overcome obstacles, and offered encouragement and support. He also spoke about protecting the rights of children with disabilities, and stressed the “legal and moral obligation to provide inclusive education, in which the main focus is on developing skills and abilities in children with different developmental processes,” according to <\/span>CNN<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Pendraovskin called the behavior of those who would endanger the rights of these children “unacceptable,” stating that they\u00a0“should not only enjoy the rights they deserve, but also feel equal and welcome in the school desks and schoolyard. It is our obligation, as a state, but also as individuals, and the key element in this common mission is empathy.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In comments under photos and a video posted to Instagram, the President continued his theme. “Prejudice must not be stronger than the rights of children. We are all equally responsible for the smile of Embla and all children with atypical development,” read the post on <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Inclusiveness as an aspiration should not remain just a declarative principle, but to use the potentials of people with atypical development. Prejudice should not be an obstacle to building an equal and just society for all. Empathy is our moral obligation,” Pendarovski also said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Worldwide, Down syndrome is a prenatal diagnosis that frequently results in medical professionals encouraging abortion. In the States, the <\/span>pressure to abort<\/span><\/a> comes early. In the UK, the pressure towards abortion is so strong \u2013 and the abortion rate for Down syndrome sitting around 90% \u2013 that the country\u2019s obstetric professional organization released guidelines <\/span>directing doctors to stop pressuring parents to abort<\/span><\/a> based on prenatal screenings. In Iceland, the abortion rate for people with Down syndrome is <\/span>nearly 100%<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

When people with Down syndrome disappear due to abortion, society seems to have a hard time helping them with their needs. People with Down syndrome <\/span>frequently<\/span><\/a> face <\/span>discrimination<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>health care<\/span><\/a>, and in many places they face discrimination in <\/span>education<\/span><\/a> as well.<\/span><\/p>\n
