The U.S. Senate has confirmed<\/a>\u00a0Robert Califf to head the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by a narrow margin of 50 to 46, despite Califf’s\u00a0previous<\/a> oversight of the expansion of the abortion pill. Califf\u00a0headed the agency in 2016, when the Obama Administration’s FDA\u00a0extended<\/a>\u00a0the use of the deadly abortion pill regimen to preborn babies 10 weeks old,\u00a0past the previously approved<\/a>\u00a0limit of 49 days (7 weeks).<\/p>\n

Califf will\u00a0replace acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, who served<\/a> as director of the FDA\u2019s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in the years when the agency first approved the abortion pill in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, multiple pro-life leaders expressed their opposition to Califf’s nomination.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder Califf\u2019s leadership during the Obama Administration, the FDA significantly undermined the reporting and safety requirements on medication abortion, also known as chemical abortion,\u201d a letter from the coalition of pro-life groups states<\/a>. \u201cAs the abortion industry continues to push for abortion on demand, the FDA needs a leader who will follow the science and prioritize the health and well-being of women and girls. Based on his past (successful) effort to weaken data and safety requirements for chemical abortion, we must oppose his nomination.\u201d<\/p>\n

READ:\u00a0Senators grill FDA Commissioner nominee Robert Califf on his history of expanding abortion pill use<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In\u00a02016<\/a>, under\u00a0Califf\u2019s leadership<\/a>, the FDA enabled several modifications to a safety requirement for the abortion pill (Mifeprex) known as the\u00a0Risk Evaluation and Mitigation System<\/a>\u00a0(REMS), which included “the interval between taking Mifeprex and misoprostol, and the location at which the woman may take misoprostol.\u201d While abortion clients at the time were required to pick up the drugs in person at an approved facility, the safety modifications enabled<\/a> women and teen girls to then take the drug unsupervised at home or any other location.<\/p>\n

In addition, under Califf’s leadership, the FDA’s\u00a02016 modifications<\/a>\u00a0no longer mandated that the abortion pill manufacturer, Danco Laboratories, report abortion pill\u00a0complications<\/a>\u00a0(adverse events) to the FDA. Instead, Danco only had to report deaths. For this reason, it is unknown how many teen girls or women have suffered complications from the abortion pill, as there are no federal mandates to report or track abortion complications.<\/p>\n

According to data<\/a>\u00a0which was published<\/a>\u00a0in December 2021, the FDA\u00a0revealed<\/a> that as of June 30, 2021, “there were reports of 26 deaths of women associated with mifepristone since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the womb, such as in the fallopian tubes) resulting in death; and several cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis), including some that were fatal.\u201d<\/p>\n

But since the 2016 modifications under Califf no longer required adverse events be reported, those numbers barely changed from what had previously<\/a> been recorded. This limited data paved the way for Biden’s FDA to further weaken<\/a>\u00a0FDA’s REMS late last year, by allowing abortion pills to be permanently shipped by mail, despite potentially serious complications<\/a> that could arise.<\/p>\n

As of June of 2021, FDA estimates that “approximately 4.9 million women\u201d have used the drug to end a pregnancy since the abortion pill was approved in 2000. Tragically, this represents nearly five million preborn babies violently killed by the abortion pill.<\/p>\n
