A team of doctors saved an Iranian mother and her daughter after a botched abortion nearly claimed both of their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As <\/span>The Sun<\/span><\/a> reported, the 40-year-old woman from Iran suffered a botched abortion during her 14th week of pregnancy. According to an <\/span>ABC News<\/span><\/a> report last October, most abortions are illegal in Iran, except in cases of fetal anomaly or a risk to the mother\u2019s life. Although, as <\/span>Live Action News<\/span><\/a> has noted, there is a difference between providing medical care that may unintentionally result in a preborn child\u2019s death versus deliberately ending the baby\u2019s life via an elective abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The mother paid a midwife to commit the illegal abortion at her home, according to the report.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The abortion perforated the woman\u2019s uterus but did not kill her preborn daughter, who instead shifted into her mother\u2019s abdomen and continued to grow, according to a case report published in the <\/span>International Journal of Case Reports and Images<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite suffering from severe pain for weeks, fearful of prosecution, the woman decided against going to the hospital. While some of the pain lessened after two weeks, she began to feel sick again 10 weeks later. Eventually, the mother went to the hospital after another two weeks had passed, suffering from abdominal pain, weakness, vertigo, and loss of appetite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unbeknownst to the woman, her baby was breached in her bowel, but a team of five doctors delivered the child by performing an emergency surgery at 29 weeks of pregnancy. Miraculously, the baby girl had no health issues even though she had been growing in the wrong place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is probably the first case that shows an abdominal pregnancy can result from unsuccessful induced abortion,\u201d the case report reads.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, the report also disclosed that both mother and child are alive, and the woman did not suffer any complications from the emergency surgery, as she was discharged six days later from the hospital in \u201cgood health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
