Wade<\/em>, there are rumblings that Colorado lawmakers may attempt to cement abortion access into the state constitution as early as 2024 \u2014 a move that would require a constitutional amendment and the support of 55% of voters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, Colorado lawmakers are slated to introduce the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2022\/01\/24\/abortion-access-guaranteed-colorado-law-roe-vs-wade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reproductive Health Equity Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or RHEA, to the Colorado General Assembly, which would enshrine the \u201cright\u201d to abortion into state law. The prime sponsors are State Sen. Julie Gonzales and State Rep. Meg Froelich, along with Colorado House Majority Leader Daneya Esgar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-abortion lawmakers intend to use RHEA to set the stage for a constitutional amendment on abortion. However, the law could be repealed if the GOP were to take back control of the statehouse, though it wouldn\u2019t be easy. Knowing this, abortion activists are pushing to codify abortion access into the state constitution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, members of the GOP have vowed to continue to move forward with legislation that would significantly limit abortion and require abortionists to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb21-1183\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> information about their patients to the state. Colorado GOP Chairwoman Kristi Burton Brown <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2022\/02\/02\/colorado-abortion-access-bill-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Colorado Sun, \u201cThe Republican Party will always work to protect every child in love and in law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/colorado-church-vandalized-pro-abortion-graffiti\/\">Colorado church vandalized with pro-abortion graffiti<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Colorado ultimately codifies abortion access into the constitution, the GOP would no longer be able to ban or place restrictions on abortion without amending the constitution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Middleton, president of the Colorado abortion rights group Cobalt, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2022\/02\/02\/colorado-abortion-access-bill-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ultimate focus of her group will be on lifting the ban on state funding of abortion and that a constitutional amendment on abortion would help make that happen. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/poll-americans-oppose-taxpayer-funding-us-abroad\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has consistently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/polls-majority-women-dont-want-taxpayer-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Americans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kofc.org\/en\/resources\/news-room\/polls\/kofc-americans-opinions-on-abortion012021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taxpayer-funded abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The timing of this push by abortion activists is no coincidence. This year, there is a strong possibility that <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in all 50 states, will be overturned. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a pending Supreme Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-potential-challenge-roe-wade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which Mississippi\u2019s sole abortion provider is challenging a law that limits abortion to before 15 weeks gestation. A decision is expected around June 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, however, Colorado has a long pro-abortion history. In 1967, Colorado became the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradonewsline.com\/2022\/01\/12\/time-for-colorado-to-protect-abortion-access\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state to decriminalize abortion. More recently, while many states temporarily suspended non-urgent and elective medical procedures, including abortion, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Colorado continued to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/colorado-planned-parenthood-abortion-extraordinary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abortion procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Supreme Court does reconsider <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, states will be free to set their own abortion laws. But some states, like Texas, have enacted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-ban-nearly-all-abortions-roe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctrigger\u201d laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would ban abortion if <em>Roe<\/em> is overturned. Women in states that protect the lives of preborn children may travel to more permissive states, like Colorado, to obtain abortions.
