{"id":262246,"date":"2022-03-01T08:43:36","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T14:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=262246"},"modified":"2022-03-05T20:03:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-06T02:03:07","slug":"missed-period-pills-women-know-pregnant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/missed-period-pills-women-know-pregnant\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion industry promotes &#8216;missed period pills&#8217; so women won&#8217;t know if they were pregnant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In an attempt to normalize abortion by using deceptive euphemisms, the abortion industry is now referring to the use of mifepristone and\/or misoprostol (the same drugs as are used in the abortion pill regimen) as &#8220;missed period pills&#8221; or &#8220;later period pills.&#8221;\u00a0The drugs are being sold to women <em>without<\/em> a confirmation of pregnancy, and they are led to believe the drugs will merely &#8220;bring down a period,&#8221; allowing them to escape the knowledge of whether or not they killed their own preborn children.<\/p>\n<p>This unapproved process also flouts important safety regulations put in place by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under a program called REMS, which requires prescribers of the abortion pill mifepristone to properly date a pregnancy. While abortion enthusiasts are calling their <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RBraceySherman\/status\/356891527412318208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest scheme<\/a> &#8220;creative,&#8221; pro-life advocates accurately refer to it as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/wng.org\/articles\/abortion-in-disguise-1641866562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion in disguise<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A collaboration of groups with the goal of keeping women in ignorance<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/myemail.constantcontact.com\/Missed-Period-Pills-Gaining-Traction-in-the-U-S-.html?soid=1118608395001&amp;aid=dGf2sV24kZo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">e-mail<\/a> to supporters, pro-abortion organization Gynuity Health Projects (GHP) announced a collaboration on missed period pills through formation of the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.periodpills.org\/national-working-group-on-period-pills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Working Group on Missed Period Pills,<\/a>&#8221; which includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.periodpills.org\/national-working-group-on-period-pills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number of abortion organizations<\/a>, under the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.periodpills.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PeriodPills.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Period pills bring on your period when it is late, even by just a few days. If you are pregnant, these pills\u00a0will end your very early pregnancy,&#8221; the website claims. &#8220;But you do not have to take a pregnancy test or confirm you are pregnant before using period pills. Yes! Period Pills are real&#8230; Sometimes this is referred to as menstrual regulation, or pushing a period, or bringing down a period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The site actually admits that the whole point of &#8220;missed period pills&#8221; is to remain in ignorance, noting (emphasis added),\u00a0&#8220;If someone is pregnant, taking these medications will end their pregnancy. This can be referred to as an abortion. <strong>But since pregnancy is not verified before taking the pills, a person will never know if they were or weren\u2019t starting a pregnancy when they took the pills.<\/strong> Late period pills will bring down a person\u2019s menses even if they aren\u2019t pregnant, and can provide reassurance and peace of mind if someone doesn\u2019t want to be pregnant. A person does not need to take a pregnancy test or confirm a pregnancy to use missed period pills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The site adds, &#8220;Late period pills let us choose to get our periods or have chemical pregnancies when we don\u2019t want a pregnancy to become established. Instead of waiting and worrying, we can take pills and bring on our periods.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Gynuity: If\u00a0pregnant, it causes abortion; if not, women &#8216;probably don&#8217;t need&#8217; it<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Gynuity also <a href=\"https:\/\/myemail.constantcontact.com\/Missed-Period-Pills-Gaining-Traction-in-the-U-S-.html?soid=1118608395001&amp;aid=dGf2sV24kZo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0about its intention to partner with abortion chain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-chain-carafem-normalize-expand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carafem<\/a>\u00a0to &#8220;study the acceptability and use of mifepristone plus misoprostol for menses induction in the US.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210107192636\/https:\/\/carafem.org\/missed-period\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archived page<\/a>\u00a0from Carafem&#8217;s website shows how the abortion chain deceptively marketed so-called missed period pills as a <em>new medication option<\/em>. &#8220;If you don\u2019t want to be pregnant, you may be eligible to use a new medication option as soon as 28 days from when your last period started&#8230; with no requirement to wait several weeks for treatment,&#8221; they wrote. A more current page at Carafem&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/carafem.org\/why-is-my-period-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> states the abortion business is &#8220;conducting a study that uses Mifepristone and Misoprostol within as little as 28 days from your last period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_262204\" style=\"width: 588px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-262204\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-262204\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carafem-archived-2021-website-Missed-Period-Pill-uses-the-abortion-pill-regimen.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Carafem archived 2021 website Missed Period Pill uses the abortion pill regimen\" width=\"578\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carafem-archived-2021-website-Missed-Period-Pill-uses-the-abortion-pill-regimen.jpg 756w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carafem-archived-2021-website-Missed-Period-Pill-uses-the-abortion-pill-regimen-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carafem-archived-2021-website-Missed-Period-Pill-uses-the-abortion-pill-regimen-700x680.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Carafem-archived-2021-website-Missed-Period-Pill-uses-the-abortion-pill-regimen-500x485.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-262204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carafem archived 2021 website Missed Period Pill uses the abortion pill regimen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Melissa Grant, chief operations officer of Carafem, recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/msmagazine.com\/2022\/02\/02\/online-abortion-pills-telemedicine-melissa-grant-carafem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a>\u00a0to Ms. Magazine, &#8220;We actually were doing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gynuity.org\/news\/exploring-potential-interest-in-missed-period-pills-in-two-us-states\">Gynuity study<\/a>\u00a0in D.C. last year on missed period pills that temporarily paused during the pandemic&#8230;.<strong>We let them know clearly, if you do this and you\u2019re pregnant, it\u2019s an abortion, and if you do this and you\u2019re not pregnant, you\u2019re taking medication that you probably don\u2019t need<\/strong>&#8230;&#8221; (emphasis added).<\/p>\n<p>Wendy Sheldon, a senior associate at Gynuity,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rewirenewsgroup.com\/article\/2021\/03\/11\/is-the-u-s-missing-out-with-missed-period-pills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> to Rewire News Group that this deception is &#8220;liberating&#8221; and carries &#8220;benefits&#8221; so women can &#8220;take control over their reproduction without being constrained by other people\u2019s definitions of pregnancy, abortion, or other terms that may not reflect their beliefs or lived experiences&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sheldon added, &#8220;Missed period pills can also provide the psychological space for people to define what\u2019s happening to their bodies on their own terms, consistent with their beliefs. For me, this is one of the most liberating and appealing aspects of this idea&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>UCSF Missed Period Pill Study (MPP)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) calls its missed period pill <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04940013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> a &#8220;more creative method&#8221; to support abortion goals. UCSF&#8217;s study began recruiting in June of 2021 and will <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04940013?cond=%22Late+Period%22&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">utilize<\/a>\u00a0just the second pill in the abortion pill regimen \u2014 misoprostol, originally approved as an ulcer drug under the brand name Cytotec. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2018\/019268s051lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drug&#8217;s label<\/a> warns that misoprostol can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/nda\/2001\/019268Orig1s000.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uterine rupture<\/a> and will not impact a dangerous ectopic pregnancy. It will induce heavy bleeding and cramping if a woman is pregnant, and cause contractions strong enough to kill and then expel the child. By using misoprostol alone without mifepristone to first block progesterone and deprive the preborn child of nutrients, the abortion industry knows women will be unable to reverse the effects of the drug.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the number of state laws restricting access to abortion increases across the country, <em>more creative methods<\/em> are needed to support individuals in achieving their reproductive goals. Misoprostol alone for people who suspect, but have not confirmed pregnancy, has the potential to fulfill this growing need,&#8221; UCSF&#8217;s Missed Period Pill study (MPPS)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04940013?cond=%22Late+Period%22&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal of this research study is to test a traditional but underutilized framework of menstrual regulation for pregnancy loss, to &#8216;bring back&#8217; a period when it is missed,&#8221; the study, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.ucsf.edu\/trial\/NCT04940013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">principle investigator<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/chc.ucsf.edu\/people\/ushma-upadhyay-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Ushma Upadhyay<\/a>, also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04940013?cond=%22Late+Period%22&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The participant will not know the results of the first visit&#8217;s pregnancy test at any point. They asked women if they would be happy or unhappy about becoming pregnant and if, instead of a pregnancy test, they would be interested in a hypothetical service offering what they called &#8216;missed-period pills,'&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/03\/opinion\/pregnancy-missed-period-pills.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0the New York Times (NYT) about the\u00a0study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(20)30337-1\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in the pro-abortion Journal Contraception.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Doing so, many said, would allow them to avoid the burden of that knowledge and the pain of self-flagellation, providing them with a psychological benefit at a time of great stress,&#8221; NYT wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u201cIt would be easier on my emotional well-being to not know I was actually pregnant but to alleviate the issue which is my missed period,&#8221; one of the study participants stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u201cI wouldn\u2019t feel I am a bad person,\u201d another <a href=\"https:\/\/msmagazine.com\/2021\/01\/08\/could-missed-period-pills-be-the-future-of-reproductive-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Equal Rights Institute editor Andrew Kaake pointed out how the deceptive name interferes with informed consent,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.equalrightsinstitute.com\/missed-period-pills-an-ethical-nightmare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing<\/a>\u00a0in part, &#8220;The use of a euphemistic name&#8230; does not change the pill into anything other than an abortion pill, and an attempt to use such marketing to fool women or induce them to fool themselves interferes with informed consent. More troubling, though, is the idea that it\u2019s better for the woman if she thinks, by taking the \u201cmissed period pill,\u201d she only\u00a0<i>maybe<\/i>\u00a0had an abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why is intentionally muddying the moral waters and getting women to act a certain way despite their beliefs a positive thing?&#8221; writer Petra <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/dressing-up-abortion-drugs-as-missed-period-pills-another-way-to-prey-on-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> at Pregnancy Help News.\u00a0&#8220;In reality, it\u2019s just a way for abortion advocates to try to further the idea that abortion is a morally good and normal choice to increase their sales; there is no real concern for these conflicted women.
