{"id":261882,"date":"2022-02-01T18:40:01","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T00:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=261882"},"modified":"2022-01-31T17:42:40","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T23:42:40","slug":"court-pro-life-victory-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/court-pro-life-victory-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"Court rules Canadian city was \u2018unreasonable\u2019 in removing pro-life ads from buses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a major pro-life victory, a court has ruled that the city of Guelph, Ontario, was \u201cunreasonable\u201d in its decision to remove several pro-life advertisements from the backs of city buses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advertisements were removed by the city in 2019 and 2020 following a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guelphtoday.com\/local-news\/public-complaint-leads-to-removal-of-anti-abortion-ad-from-guelph-transit-buses-2103063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complaint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from local citizen Fiona Douglas. Douglas argued that the ads were \u201ctriggering\u201d for pro-abortion women and women who have had an abortion. The city\u2019s Ad Standards council sided with Douglas and the ads were taken down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, Guelph &amp; Area Right to Life <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ontario-removes-pro-life-bus-ads-human\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the city\u2019s decision to remove the ads for violating the right to freedom of expression under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court ruled in the pro-life group&#8217;s favor. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guelphforlife.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Guelph &amp; Area Right to Life praised this decision and noted that it affirmed not only the rights of their organization but of all Canadian pro-life organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FGuelph4Life%2Fposts%2F4674789535902558&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"280\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are ecstatic! This is a big win for us locally and the Canadian Pro-Life movement. We thank [attorney] Carol Crosson for all the amazing work she did in this case, as well as the various intervenors who took an interest in our legal action and spoke in our defense. We look forward to sharing life-affirming messages in our city once again,\u201d said Kristin Swaving, President of Guelph &amp; Area Right to Life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the ads in question <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guelphtoday.com\/local-news\/public-complaint-leads-to-removal-of-anti-abortion-ad-from-guelph-transit-buses-2103063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depicted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a pregnant woman on one side and a woman holding a newborn baby on the other. It stated, \u201cHuman rights should not depend on where you are. Say no to abortion.\u201d Another ad showed an image of a fetal ultrasound with the caption: \u201cLife should be the most fundamental human right. Say no to abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her complaint, Douglas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ontario-removes-pro-life-bus-ads-human\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said the ads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spread the \u201cmisleading\u201d information that a preborn child is human. She argued that pro-life groups have a right to advertise, but not to spread false information. However, Douglas ignores the scientific consensus that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/40-quotes-from-medical-experts-that-prove-human-life-begins-at-conception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human life begins at fertilization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the beginning of legal personhood is hotly debated among some, it is scientifically \u00a0and biologically inaccurate to claim that a preborn child is not human until birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/phoenix-abortionist-gun-sidewalk-protester\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>WATCH: Phoenix abortionist arrested after appearing to point gun at sidewalk protester<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, the censorship of pro-life advertisements is not limited to Canada. In a significant blow to free speech, a court in Slovenia <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/slovenia-pro-life-censored-blow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in favor of censoring pro-life advertising last month after a state-owned bus company removed pro-life ads from its buses in 2018. The ads featured messages like \u201cWe love Life, \u201cYou are not alone,\u201d \u201cStep out of Silence,\u201d and \u201cI mourn my child.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/news\/2021\/april\/franklin-graham-lgbt-bus-blackpool-uk-lawsuit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar incident<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurred in the United Kingdom in 2018, when ads for a Christian festival were removed from buses. Fortunately, in that case, the court ruled that the removal of the ads was discriminatory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fight against pro-life censorship in Guelph isn\u2019t over yet. In the wake of the new ruling, the city issued a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guelph.ca\/2022\/01\/city-receives-courts-reasons-for-decision-considers-next-steps\/?utm_source=guelphtoday.com&amp;utm_campaign=guelphtoday.com%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saying it is \u201cconsidering next steps\u201d and has not made \u201cany determination about the specific advertising content which the Court has remitted for its reconsideration.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a major pro-life victory, a court has ruled that the city of Guelph, Ontario, was \u201cunreasonable\u201d in its decision to remove several pro-life advertisements from the backs of city buses.
