Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision regarding Mississippi&#8217;s restriction on abortions after 15 weeks gestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In what is likely an attempt to stir up its target audience with heated emotions, the video presented several misleading claims to make people feel comfortable with abortion&#8230; and uneasy about pro-lifers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FPlannedParenthood%2Fvideos%2F382126213681070%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"429\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Historical Inaccuracies <\/b>(0:00 &#8211; 0:24)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The video purports that there was a time in history when a \u201cperson\u2019s decision to end a pregnancy was respected as their own,\u201d asserting that abortion methods were sold in drug stores and advertised in newspapers without \u201cthe shame and stigma we see today.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat all changed in the 19th century when the male-led medical establishment edged out caregiving women and took over childbirth,\u201d the video claimed. \u201cAbortions were soon illegal and often dangerous.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Gump, author of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B09GRNYG8K\/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criminal Abortion Laws Before the Fourteenth Amendment: A Timeline and Visual Review of Jurisprudence and Historical Milestones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refuted this point in a statement provided to Live Action News.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPhysicians would shun and mock anyone in their ranks who would perform abortions. This went on from at least the early 1800s. Their newsletters would have a \u2018wall of shame\u2019 section, where they would say \u2018good riddance\u2019 to anyone who was arrested for performing abortions,\u201d Gump wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author explained that, from the Colonial times onward, abortions past the point of quickening were always felonies in the United States. One of the problems with prosecuting abortionists during this time, however, is that it could be difficult to tell if an act was an induced abortion or infanticide during a later pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was easier to dispose of fetal remains earlier, so the underground abortion industry was often able to escape prosecution unless someone informed authorities, or the woman was injured,\u201d Gump wrote. \u201cAnn Lohman (Madam Restell) was a notorious abortionist in NYC who was finally convicted in the mid-1800s. Numerous other cases saw convictions of abortionists, as well. No woman was ever convicted for self-inductions, as the abortionist was always the target of prosecution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Page 70 of Gump\u2019s book further explains the Madam Restell case:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On January 3, 1848, the New York Supreme Court ruled in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People v. Lohman<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regarding the abortionist Ann Lohman (alias Madam Restell), who procured an abortion on Maria Bodine, resulting in the death of her unborn child.\u00a0 The defense took exception to the procedures of a lower court that led to the conviction.\u00a0 The New York Supreme Court ruled that any procedural errors only affected the proving of her \u2018intent to destroy the child\u2019 (a felony of manslaughter) but that there was still sufficient evidence to convict her on a misdemeanor for intending to procure a miscarriage.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe claims that abortions weren\u2019t banned until the late 1800s are completely false,\u201d Gump emphasized in his statement to Live Action News. \u201cThe laws referenced in this case were enacted in 1828, among them the nation&#8217;s first-ever general fetal homicide law.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/yes-planned-parenthood-abortion-business\/\">Fact checking the fact checkers: Yes, Planned Parenthood is an abortion business<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Legalizing Abortion Did Not Make It Safe <\/b>(0:24 &#8211; 0:42)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another assertion from the video is that abortions were dangerous until the Supreme Court\u2019s 1973 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decision declared abortion a \u201cprotected right.\u201d First, it is important to note that pro-lifers do not want women to be harmed by abortion. If it is true that abortion is an unjust act of violence against an innocent human, however, that would not justify keeping it legal to supposedly make it safer to have one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the legal status of abortion appears to have no relevance to whether abortion is safe. Former Planned Parenthood Director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-book-teens-lies-illegal-abortion-deaths\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary S. Calderone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted in a 1960 article in the American Journal of Public Health, licensed physicians committed most illegal abortions and the fatality rate was low. NARAL founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-naral-50-years-neglects-male-founders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bernard Nathanson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also admitted years ago that his organization fabricated the statistics on the number of women who died from illegal abortions before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legalization of abortion did not suddenly protect women from injury or death. If anything, it emboldened dangerous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/roe-allowed-criminal-abortionists-business\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back-alley abortionists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to conduct their operations in plain sight, as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removed any fear they might have had of prosecution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Public Opinion About Abortion <\/b>(0:59 &#8211; 1:00)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood\u2019s video claimed that 80% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal, but people\u2019s views on abortion tend to be more complex than the video conveys. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/poll-americans-abortion-restrictions-pills-mail\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported, a recent Marist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kofc.org\/en\/resources\/communications\/marist-polling-slide-deck2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 71% of Americans support significant restrictions on abortion, with many believing it should only be available during the first trimester or in cases of rape or incest. In that survey, 73% of Americans also said they \u201coppose\u201d or \u201cstrongly oppose\u201d using tax dollars to support abortion abroad, including 59% who self-identify as pro-choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 61% of respondents said they want to see it overturned, with 44% saying that individual states should determine the legality of abortion and 17% saying they want abortion to be made illegal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Opposing Abortion Is Not a Matter of Personal Preference <\/b>(0:45 &#8211; 0:53)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood\u2019s video cited a familiar argument, claiming that ever since the Supreme Court\u2019s 1973 ruling, protestors and politicians have \u201cused their personal beliefs to make it harder and harder for many of us to get the health care we need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-lifers are not arguing that women should not have access to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-health-care-undermines-womens-autonomy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by opposing an action that results in the deaths of preborn children.
