On January 20, lawmakers in France passed a formal resolution declaring China’s treatment of the Uighur Muslim people as genocide. The motion, which passed with a vote of 169-1, states that the National Assembly\u00a0“officially recognizes the\u00a0violence perpetrated by the People’s Republic of China\u00a0against the\u00a0Uighurs\u00a0as constituting crimes against humanity and genocide.”<\/p>\n

According to France 24<\/a>, the motion also calls on the French government to act, and undertake\u00a0“the necessary measures within the international community and in its foreign policy towards the People’s Republic of China” to protect the minority group in the Xinjiang region.<\/p>\n

In fighting for the resolution’s passage, Socialist Party leader\u00a0Olivier Faure recounted testimony from survivors telling of the horrors within Uighur internment camps. Such horrors include forced organ removal, rape, torture, and living conditions in which men and women can’t even lie down in their cells. Live Action News has previously reported on other horrors<\/a> committed against the Uighurs, including forced abortions, the\u00a0murder of newborns at birth<\/a>, and the hunting down and pursuit of Uighurs around the world.<\/p>\n

Despite ample evidence of these atrocities, China has continued to deny any wrongdoing. The Chinese Embassy in France spoke out following the resolution’s passage, saying<\/a>, \u201cThe French side is fully aware of the absurdity and harmfulness of this resolution. It must show coherence between word and deed and take concrete actions to safeguard the healthy development of Sino-French relations.\u201d<\/p>\n

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, also denounced the resolution. “The French National Assembly’s resolution … ignores reality and common sense in law,” he said, according to Euronews<\/a>. “This is a gross interference in China’s internal affairs. China is strongly opposed to it.”<\/p>\n

While it is laudable that, like other countries<\/a>, France is recognizing the atrocities committed against the Uighur people, it’s hard to ignore that France itself has an inconsistent track record with life-ethic issues. The country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, has been outspoken in his support for abortion and euthanasia, most recently<\/a> calling for the European Union to adopt the right to abortion in its charter revision. In 2019, the country saw a record-high<\/a> number of abortions, and lawmakers are looking to expand the current abortion limitations. Macron has also publically supported a man who wanted to livestream his own suicide<\/a>, and in 2019, the country’s highest court ruled that a quadriplegic man, who was not otherwise ill or in near the end of his life, could be starved to death<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is vitally important to fight for the humane and dignified treatment of the Uighur people, and it is also important to fight for those vulnerable among us \u2014 the elderly, sick, and preborn.<\/p>\n
