A new bill written by a pro-life U.S. senator from Montana would, for the first time, allow pregnant women to claim their preborn child for a $2,000 tax credit.<\/p>\n

The Child Tax Credit for Pregnant Moms Act of 2022 has been introduced by Senator Steve Daines. Depending on when the child is conceived, the pregnant mother could potentially receive a $4,000 tax credit. Children conceived and born in the same year would fall into this category, while children born and conceived in two separate years would be eligible for $2,000 in subsequent years. For mothers who choose adoption after birth, the biological mother and the child’s guardian would split the tax credit for the year of the child’s birth.<\/p>\n

The bill would also recognize parents of children who are miscarried or stillborn, with a licensed health care practitioner required to certify that the woman had been pregnant and experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth. Both the mother and the health care practitioner would need to certify that the death of the child was not caused intentionally, and the health care practitioner would not qualify if they work for an abortion business. The health care practitioner would submit a registration of the miscarriage or stillbirth to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) if the mother requests it. This would give the mother a federal certificate of miscarriage or stillbirth, which can be used for the Child Tax Credit.<\/p>\n

Senator Daines said the United States needs to do more to support pregnant women and their children. “From stocking up on diapers, to setting up a new crib, to taking time off work for their child\u2019s prenatal care, expecting parents begin to provide for their unborn child and plan for that child\u2019s future as soon as they learn they are having a baby,” he said in a statement to Live Action News. “The U.S. is well below replacement rate, and our birthrate has been on a downward trajectory for years. The social and economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic have exacerbated that decline. We must do more to support pregnant moms and their unborn children, and to prevent a demographic time bomb that threatens the nation\u2019s workforce and the social safety net.”<\/p>\n
