The information comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04432792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trial<\/a>\u00a0sponsored by UCSF called the CHAT Study, which stands for California Home Abortion by Telehealth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;CHAT is the first study of its kind in the U.S. that will evaluate abortion medication by mail without the need for a doctor\u2019s visit or ultrasound,&#8221; a <a href=\"https:\/\/givingtogether.ucsf.edu\/fundraiser\/2866258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraising page<\/a> for the study states.<\/p>\n<p>UCSF <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04432792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> about the trial, &#8220;The study will aim to reach a diverse sample of medication abortion patients across the country in states where care is provided including California, New York, and Washington, thus far. In California alone, an estimated 50% of all abortions are medication abortions resulting in &gt;66,000 medication abortions per year. <strong>California accounts for 20% of the nation&#8217;s medication abortions<\/strong>.&#8221; (emphasis added)<\/p>\n<p>California is not required to report abortions in the state and these numbers are therefore not factored into data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which recently noted that chemical abortions comprised nearly 44% (43.7%, to be exact) of abortions reported to the CDC\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/44-abortions-recent-cdc-report-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_261179\" style=\"width: 830px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261179\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-261179\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/UCSF-abortion-pill-study-66K-chemical-abortions-in-California-a-year-recruits-girls-as-young-as-13.jpg\" alt=\"Image: UCSF abortion pill study 66K chemical abortions in California a year recruits girls as young as 13\" width=\"820\" height=\"487\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-261179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UCSF abortion pill study 66K chemical abortions in California a year recruits girls as young as 13<\/p><\/div>\n<p>California has vowed to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-prepares-abortion-destination-roe-falls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sanctuary<\/a> for abortion and recently formed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthoodaction.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/d8\/e1\/d8e17825-72e0-4f6f-9c57-7549bb54261e\/ca_fab_council_report_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Future of Abortion Council<\/a> initiative. In 2019, Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-taxpayers-half-billion-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reviewed<\/a> reports published by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coveredca.com\/medi-cal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medi-Cal<\/a>, a California state taxpayer-funded program for low-income children and adults, and found that in just the state\u2019s Fee for Service (FFS) Program,\u00a0taxpayers paid nearly $700 million for abortions over 25 years, from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhcs.ca.gov\/dataandstats\/statistics\/Documents\/ab00.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1989<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhcs.ca.gov\/dataandstats\/statistics\/Documents\/Medi-Cal_Funded_Abortions_2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>California Home Abortion by Telehealth (CHAT) Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CHAT\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04432792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, which it is expected to be completed in October of this year, aims to \u201cassess efficacy and safety outcomes of a telehealth model of abortion care,\u201d and \u201cwill compare efficacy of this model to usual in-clinic care based on published rates. It will also investigate participant acceptability and feasibility of this model of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CHAT study is sponsored by UCSF and is being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.ucsf.edu\/trial\/NCT04432792#eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overseen<\/a> by <a class=\"trial--link-to-pi-profile\" href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/ushma.upadhyay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"author noopener\">Ushma Upadhyay<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/about\/staff\/jennifer-ko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Ko<\/a>. It is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.ucsf.edu\/trial\/NCT04432792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recruiting<\/a> &#8220;females ages 13 years and up.&#8221; Upadhyay is an Associate Professor at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ushma-upadhyay-phd-mph-294333\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCSF\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH).\u00a0ANSIRH is part of UCSF\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/studies-funded-abortion-supporters-attempt-disprove-women-regret-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health<\/a>. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/no-test-contact-abortion-covid-works-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, Upadhyay advocated a \u201cno test\/no touch\u201d approach where she and her colleagues suggested that abortion providers should simply \u201cbelieve the woman\u201d about the exact dating of her pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will examine medical chart data on all patients from partnered telehealth providers to analyze efficacy and safety outcomes for medication abortion. These medical chart data will include medical\/pregnancy history and abortion outcome and de-identified apart from date of birth, zip code, and dates of service,&#8221; the sponsors <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04432792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on the trial website.<\/p>\n<p>Then, each telabortion client will receive an optional survey &#8220;following completion of the telehealth provider&#8217;s standard medical screening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-scholarships-abortionists-medical\/\">California to offer incentives for medical students to become abortionists<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study sponsor claims, &#8220;Among those who complete the study surveys, we will investigate the feasibility, time to abortion, efficacy, safety, and acceptability of telehealth provision of mifepristone, measured using a 4-week follow-up though open-ended and closed-ended survey questions. Individuals who opted not to take the medications will be asked a separate set of follow-up questions to collect data related to diversion, to better understand potential risks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the recent announcement that the FDA is planning to review the REMS requirement, we are at a pivotal moment for the future of abortion care and reproductive autonomy&#8230;&#8221; Upadhyay previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/givingtogether.ucsf.edu\/fundraiser\/2866258\/updates\/2912018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;On May 1st\u00a02021, clinical data collection to assess the safety and efficacy of telehealth abortion care commenced. This is the data that the FDA is interested in. We\u2019ll be able to get it in front of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>UCSF partners with virtual chemical abortion pill Choix<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UCSF is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatstudy.org\/abortion-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnering<\/a> with multiple virtual abortion pill dispensaries to recruit teens and women for their CHAT study, including Choix Inc.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heyjane.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HeyJane<\/a>, and virtual abortion pill website <a href=\"https:\/\/abortionondemand.org\/chat-info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abortion on Demand<\/a> (AOD).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_261193\" style=\"width: 825px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261193\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-261193\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/UCSF-partners-with-virtual-abortion-pill-websites-AOF-Choix-and-Hey-Jane-for-CHAT-study.jpg\" alt=\"Image: UCSF partners with virtual abortion pill websites AOF Choix and Hey Jane for CHAT study\" width=\"815\" height=\"649\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-261193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UCSF partners with virtual chemical pill websites AOF Choix and Hey Jane for CHAT study<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In January of 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/buyer-beware-virtual-abortion-pill-websites-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Choix Inc<\/a>., co-founder\u00a0Cindy Adam\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/msmagazine.com\/2022\/01\/14\/abortion-pills-california-colorado-illinois-online-abortion-cindy-adam-lauren-dubey-choix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Ms. Magazine,\u00a0&#8220;There\u2019s also an option to receive a $50 electronic gift card for folks who are interested in participating in a University of California, San Francisco research study.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our chief medical officer is Dr. Aisha Wagner. She provides consultation services for the nurse practitioners as well as clinical protocol development and review. She provides in-person care as a family practice physician and also works for Planned Parenthood doing aspiration abortions,&#8221; Adam also said.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner also previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reproductiveaccess.org\/2016\/09\/welcoming-new-fellows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worked<\/a>\u00a0for at UCSF\u2019s Women\u2019s Option Center, an abortion facility at the University of California San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>While Choix&#8217;s founders did not elaborate on the UCSF partnership in their Ms. Magazine interview, online their website references the Chat Study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mychoix.co\/ucsf-chat-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stating<\/a>, &#8220;Researchers at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/research\/ongoing\/california-home-abortion-telehealth-chat-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ANSIRH<\/a>), a research group at the University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF), are conducting a study to better understand the experiences of people who use an online service to get an abortion with pills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;There are 3 short online surveys that you will take after your regularly scheduled follow ups with a Choix medical provider&#8230; After you complete the final survey you will receive a $50 cash card via email within two weeks,&#8221; the website also states.<\/p>\n<p>In December of 2021,\u00a0the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weakened<\/a>\u00a0important safety requirements called REMS on the abortion pill by removing the in-person requirement and enabling the drug regimen to be permanently shipped by mail.
