Why does a patient need to consent twice? It\u2019s good and there\u2019s always red tape. Just liberate abortion already! Let us have it OTC!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_261004\" style=\"width: 513px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261004\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-261004\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Renee-Bracey-Sherman-tweets-abortion-pills-should-be-over-the-counter.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Renee Bracey Sherman tweets abortion pills should be over the counter (Image: Twitter)\" width=\"503\" height=\"344\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-261004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Renee Bracey Sherman tweets abortion pills should be over the counter (Image: Twitter)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">December 17, t<\/span>he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-employees-accuse-abortion-organization-racism\/\">former NARAL board member<\/a> was joined by abortionist Daniel Grossman in an op-ed\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/society\/fda-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by The Nation, <\/span>openly<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0advocating for over-the-counter (OTC) abortion pills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bracey and Grossman wrote<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c&#8230; advocates and health care providers in the United States could be thinking creatively about what might come next, including providing abortion pills even before you\u2019re pregnant to have on hand if needed \u2014 or eventually over-the-counter access.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Grossman, the media&#8217;s frequently consulted expert on abortion, has multiple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-financial-conflicts-interest-politicians-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conflicts of interest<\/a>\u00a0and is deeply tied to abortion. He has been a primary force behind expanding the deadly pill regimen, which consists of the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol.\u00a0Grossman not only pushed for the FDA to completely remove the abortion pill from its safety protocol, but is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-scheme-dispense-pills-before-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocating<\/a>\u00a0for the idea of shipping women (or teens) abortion pills\u00a0<em>in advance<\/em>\u00a0of a verified pregnancy. He also recently made the highly unethical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/grossman-er-hide-abortion-pill-complications-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggestion<\/a>\u00a0that emergency health care personnel should leave out important medical facts on the records of women presenting with abortion pill complications.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also on December 17, 2021, Francine Coeytaux, co-founder of the abortion pill referral website Plan C,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/msmagazine.com\/2021\/12\/17\/fda-abortion-pill-medication-biden-mifepristone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> to Ms. Magazine, \u201cThese pills should not only be in pharmacies, they should be available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/research\/ongoing\/over-counter-medication-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But instead, years later, we\u2019re still in a place where people think of this as a drug that is so dangerous it has to be in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2019\/020687s022lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black box<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/plan-c-referral-clients-lie-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented how Plan C advises women lie to access the abortion pill.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_261000\" style=\"width: 621px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261000\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-261000\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Abortion-Pill-Mifeprex-Black-Box-Warning-2019-label-from-FDA.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion Pill Mifeprex Black Box Warning (2019 label from FDA)\" width=\"611\" height=\"692\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-261000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion Pill Mifeprex Black Box Warning (2019 label from FDA)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Less than a week after the FDA decision, Amanda Marcotte\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/biden-doesnt-need-manchin-5-executive-actions-he-can-take-right-now-to-build-back-better\/ar-AAS212i?ocid=winp-st\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> an op-ed suggesting that the Biden-Harris administration should instruct the FDA to take up the cause of over-the-counter abortion pills, writing, &#8220;It&#8217;s time to go all the way and make it legal for patients to get the pills directly from a pharmacy, with no prescription necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And even prior to the FDA&#8217;s latest move, abortionist Jennifer Gunter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrJenGunter\/status\/1382895664015699968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>, &#8220;Abortion pills should be over the counter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-not-tylenol-parents-know-minors\/\">The abortion pill is not like Tylenol, and parents should know if minors obtain it<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_261002\" style=\"width: 488px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261002\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-261002\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Abortion-doc-Jennifer-Gunter-tweets-abortion-pills-should-be-over-the-counter.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion doc Jennifer Gunter tweets abortion pills should be over the counter (Image: Twitter) \" width=\"478\" height=\"177\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-261002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion doc Jennifer Gunter tweets abortion pills should be over the counter (Image: Twitter)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Women see dangers to over-the-counter abortion pills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Grossman and other pro-abortion authors (M. Antonia Biggs, Lauren Ralph, Sarah Raifman, and Diana G. Foster) co-authored\u00a0the result of a survey they conducted on women&#8217;s attitudes about advanced provision of abortion pills as well as OTC abortion pills.\u00a0The majority of women surveyed were pro-abortion, and the authors reported that &#8220;one in five women in this study held the belief that abortion is morally wrong and should be illegal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The results of the study,\u00a0&#8220;<span class=\"title-text\">Support for and interest in alternative models of medication abortion provision among a national probability sample of U.S. women,&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"title-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0010782418304785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by the pro-abortion Journal Contraception,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"title-text\">was\u00a0funded by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the DeMartini Family Foundation, Fidelity Charitable, and &#8220;an anonymous foundation.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"title-text\"> Packard is a known investor in abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories. In other studies, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-study-anonymous-medical-journal-allowing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anonymous funders<\/a>&#8221; have been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-funded-abortion-pill-investor-buffett-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tied<\/a> to the Buffett Foundation, another Danco investor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While the authors claimed that &#8220;44% supported advance provision, 37% supported OTC access, and 29% supported online access,&#8221; the table below from the study shows that, out of 6,950 surveyed, only 9% of the women answered, &#8220;definitely yes&#8221; and 14% answered &#8220;probably yes&#8221; to wanting OTC access. In sharp contrast, the table also indicates that <strong>52%<\/strong> of the women surveyed responded &#8220;definitely no&#8221; to OTC abortion pill access.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Among all women, 23% were personally interested in advance provision, 23% in OTC access and 16% in online access,&#8221; the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_260992\" style=\"width: 1381px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-260992\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-260992\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Grossman-women-surveyed-on-over-the-counter-OTC-abortion-pills.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Grossman women surveyed on over the counter (OTC) abortion pills\" width=\"1371\" height=\"1133\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-260992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grossman women surveyed on over the counter (OTC) abortion pills<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The primary perceived disadvantages of advance provision, OTC and online access included the following: women might take the pills incorrectly (55%, 53% and 57%, respectively), not seeing a clinician before having an abortion (52%, 54% and 53%) and concerns about safety (42%, 43% and 60%),&#8221; Grossman and the other authors also wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_260993\" style=\"width: 1356px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-260993\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-260993\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Grossman-women-surveyed-on-advanced-provision-and-over-the-counter-OTC-abortion-pills.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Grossman women surveyed on advanced provision and over the counter (OTC) abortion pills\" width=\"1346\" height=\"681\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-260993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grossman women surveyed on advanced provision and over the counter (OTC) abortion pills<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Grossman identifies potential problems with OTC abortion pills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Grossman co-authored a piece <a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1471-0528.14646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by BJOG, an International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology published by John Wiley &amp; Sons Ltd on behalf of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The report, &#8220;A research agenda for moving early medical pregnancy termination over the counter,&#8221; was funded by pro-abortion group Ipas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We conducted a review of the peer-reviewed literature looking at consumer behaviours that would be necessary for an OTC application for medical pregnancy termination \u226410 weeks of gestation. Namely, demonstration of a woman&#8217;s ability to self-screen for eligibility and contraindications, comprehension of written instructions on how to use, and knowledge of when to seek medical care for complications,&#8221; Grossman et al wrote in part.<\/p>\n<p>They later added, &#8220;No studies of complication rates following self-use of medical pregnancy termination completely outside the health system, such as would be assessed in an actual use study, have been published&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The authors looked at Women on Web (WoW), an organization started by Rebecca Gomperts, who also launched the site <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lawmakers-fda-illegal-abortion-pill-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aid Access<\/a> to sell the abortion pill online. WoW\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenonweb.org\/en\/page\/485\/how-do-you-know-if-you-have-complications-and-what-should-you-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advises<\/a>\u00a0women to present to the ER and claim they are having a natural miscarriage when experiencing abortion pill complications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women on Web\u00a0indicate that women may overestimate complications or require more guidance on what to expect from the termination process given that <strong>12\u201320% subsequently received a surgical intervention<\/strong>,<a id=\"bjo14646-bib-0007R\" class=\"bibLink tab-link\" href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1471-0528.14646#bjo14646-bib-0007\">7<\/a>,\u00a0<a id=\"bjo14646-bib-0008R\" class=\"bibLink tab-link\" href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1471-0528.14646#bjo14646-bib-0008\">8<\/a>,\u00a0<a id=\"bjo14646-bib-0033R\" class=\"bibLink tab-link\" href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1471-0528.14646#bjo14646-bib-0033\">33<\/a>\u00a0although this may also reflect provider overtreatment or local treatment standards,&#8221; the authors wrote (emphasis added).<\/p>\n<p>Another concern for OTC abortion pill is whether women will use the pills past the approved gestational limits. &#8220;In an OTC setting, concerted research would need to determine how to best mitigate the risk of off-label use in later gestations&#8230;&#8221; the authors wrote. &#8220;Label development would need to include a warning of the adverse consequences associated with later gestations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pro-abortion American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists&#8217; (ACOG) own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2017\/05\/methods-for-estimating-the-due-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>\u00a0acknowledges the importance of properly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/papua-new-guinea-teen-dies-misoprostol-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimating gestational age<\/a>, writing, \u201cAccurate dating of pregnancy is important to improve outcomes and is a research and public health imperative.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltrasound measurement of the embryo or fetus in the first trimester (up to and including 13 6\/7 weeks of gestation) is the most accurate method to establish or confirm gestational age,\u201d\u00a0ACOG\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2017\/05\/methods-for-estimating-the-due-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cIt has been reported that\u00a0<strong>approximately one half of women<\/strong>\u00a0accurately recall their [last menstrual period] LMP.\u201d (emphasis added)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn one study, 40% of the women randomized to receive first-trimester ultrasonography had their [estimated due date] EDD adjusted because of a discrepancy of more than 5 days between ultrasound dating and LMP dating,\u201d ACOG added.<\/p>\n<p>Proper pregnancy dating\u00a0matters in abortion, because\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-abortion-pill-fda-limit-failing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failure rates<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-complications-buried-ignored\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complications<\/a>\u00a0of abortion drugs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/late-term-abortionists-experimented-hundreds-women\/\">increase<\/a>\u00a0as gestational age increases.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Grossman and his co-authors pushed for the total removal of the REMS on the abortion pill, calling it &#8220;outdated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Pro-abortion group designs study to convince FDA to approve OTC abortion pills<\/b><\/p>\n<p>After Grossman identified issues needed to convince the FDA to approve OTC abortion pills, the pro-abortion group Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/can-we-trust-new-study-claiming-women-certain-about-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ANSIRH<\/a>)\u00a0published a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/research\/ongoing\/over-counter-medication-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study design<\/a>&#8221; on OTC abortion pills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The possibility of an over-the-counter medication abortion model would involve the medications being available without a prescription in a drug store or grocery, similar to emergency contraception or condoms and pregnancy tests. The pills would come with detailed instructions as well as information about access to a number of different resources, such as a 24-hour telephone number to call with questions about the medication,&#8221; ANSIRH wrote.<\/p>\n<p>According to the design, ANSIRH plans to &#8220;investigate whether individuals can:<\/p>\n<p>1. Understand a Drug Facts Label,<\/p>\n<p>2. Assess gestational age and rule out other contraindications for medication abortion,<\/p>\n<p>3. Self-administer the medications according to instructions, and<\/p>\n<p>4. Identify complications and know when to seek medical care, including for ongoing pregnancy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly though &#8220;complications&#8221; are mentioned, the public is typically told abortion pills are safe (even &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cecile-richards-abortion-pill-safer\/\">safer than Tylenol<\/a>&#8220;), despite the potential <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-dangers-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion pill dangers,<\/a>\u00a0complications, and failures.<\/p>\n<p>The motivation behind the study design was clear, according to ANSIRH: &#8220;In the long term, FDA approval of an OTC mifepristone-misoprostol product could dramatically increase access to medication abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a> for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Days following the Biden&#8217;s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) December 16 decision to\u00a0weaken the abortion pill&#8217;s REMS safety protocols and permanently allow the deadly drug to be shipped in the mail, the abortion lobby has exposed the next part of its plan to expand abortion: over the counter abortion pills.
