Wade<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is undermined or overturned.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Supreme Court considering the constitutionality of a Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks gestation, the <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-pro-life-rally-oral-arguments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> case presents a challenge to the Court\u2019s notorious 1973 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/watch-supreme-court-case-overturn-roe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <em>Dobbs<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0could be the catalyst for major changes to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washington-post-fact-check-united-states-abortion-laws-extreme-compared-rest-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abortion laws, a fact that has prompted certain parts of the country to express fear over the impact a lack of abortion access will allegedly have on women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an attempt to measure the consequences of having an abortion versus carrying a pregnancy to term, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific American<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claimed the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-abortion-turnaway-study-left-important-findings\/\">thoroughly<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-authors-continue-deceive-public-abortions-consequences\/\">debunked<\/a> Turnaway study \u201chas made great progress in measuring the impact of abortion access.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conducted by researcher Diana Greene Foster and her team, the study compared the outcomes among women who had an abortion and those who were \u201cturned away\u201d from an abortion facility for being beyond the legal gestational limit. Many have criticized the study\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-authors-continue-deceive-public-abortions-consequences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the physical and mental effects of having an abortion are small compared to the consequences of denying women an abortion, noting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/a-flawed-study-claims-that-few-women-regret-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flawed methodology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind such an overreaching conclusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of particular note is the study\u2019s low participation rate, as less than 38% of the women approached by the researchers agreed to take part in the study. While Foster and her team claim they tracked participants over a five-year time period, a significant percentage of women who initially gave their consent were lost to follow-up or refused to continue participating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should come as no surprise then that the study\u2019s conclusions about the socioeconomic situations of women turned away for an abortion do not fare any better. In this area as well, the Turnaway Study relies on sloppy research methods to support its erroneous conclusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-authors-continue-deceive-public-abortions-consequences\/\">Four reasons why the abortion \u2018Turnaway Study\u2019 should not be trusted<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>An Analysis Reliant On Faulty Comparisons and Data<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study purports to have found that women who were denied an abortion were more likely to live in poverty than those who aborted their pregnancies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSix months after they sought an abortion, 61 percent of them were below the U.S. federal poverty level, compared with 45 percent among the group who received an abortion just under the limit,\u201d the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/being-denied-an-abortion-has-lasting-impacts-on-health-and-finances\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reads, citing the study\u2019s research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/media-ignore-flaws-abortion-turnaway-study-michael-j-new\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Michael J. New<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted in his summary of the study, there are several crucial details marring the claim that denying women abortions makes them more likely to suffer economic hardship. Notably, the study tracked less than 200 women who were denied abortions. As New pointed out, this is a relatively small number of women the study is relying on to support its bold conclusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another issue is that the study\u2019s analysis utilizes a faulty comparison, comparing women who sought late-term abortions to those who were just under their state\u2019s limit at the time of the abortion. The group of women who gave birth after they were turned away for an abortion were beyond their state\u2019s legal gestational limit, a sample that does not reflect most women who seek abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering most abortions occur during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supporting-abortion-first-trimester-not-pro-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first trimester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pregnancy, it is dishonest for Foster and her team to claim the Turnaway Study represents a majority of women who carry an unexpected pregnancy to term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, accounting for why many women have late-term abortions exposes another flaw in the study\u2019s conclusion. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/contrary-to-popular-belief-late-term-abortions-arent-always-done-for-medical-reasons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reported, many women seeking late-term abortions often do so due to changes in their relationships or financial situation. This means the monetary struggles of the women in the turn away group may have existed before they thought about having an abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears that most of the study\u2019s data was also gathered one week after women had or were denied an abortion, which makes its conclusions about how abortion access impacts women\u2019s socioeconomic situations seem like quite a stretch. It seems the authors tried to remedy this by analyzing the credit scores of both groups of women, but this does not seem to support the study\u2019s analysis either.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On page 180 of a book containing the Turnaway Study\u2019s findings, a graph shows that after about four years, women who were denied an abortion had an average credit score of 550 compared to 558 for those who had an abortion. The difference between the two groups is not nearly large enough to support the claim that denying women an abortion drastically impacts their socioeconomic status.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-260756\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/image-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"764\" height=\"549\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Ignoring How Women Who Were Initially Abortion-Minded Feel About Their Children<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if a woman is more likely to struggle financially if she has a child, the possibility of living in poverty does not justify ending the life of an innocent human being. And, as Monica Snyder noted in an article at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secularprolife.org\/2021\/03\/five-years-later-96-of-women-denied\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secular Pro-Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the study\u2019s authors appear to have glossed over how women who did not go through with the abortion after the facility turned them away later felt about their circumstances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worth noting is that, only one week after they were denied an abortion, over a third of women who participated in the study no longer wished they could have had one. As Snyder pointed out, this raises some unfortunate implications about the argument from people like the study\u2019s authors that easy abortion access somehow benefits women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe pro-choice side frequently discusses how abortion restrictions pressure women to carry pregnancies they may not want, but it\u2019s also worth discussing how unrestricted abortion access can pressure women to get abortions they may not want,\u201d Snyder wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Snyder noted that women who had less social support were more likely to wish they had an abortion, that is an argument in favor of providing women with more pregnancy resources, not more abortions like Foster and her team claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An article published in Scientific American touted the Turnaway Study as proof of what women\u2019s lives will allegedly be like if Roe v.
