Former U.S. House chaplain Fr. Pat Conroy, a Jesuit priest, is in the hot seat for <\/span>comments<\/span><\/a>\u00a0he recently made, published in the Washington Post on January 5. Conroy claimed it is possible to be \u201cpro-choice\u201d and Catholic, even intimating that this is the \u201ccorrect\u201d Catholic position. In attempting to validate his claim, he made several misrepresentations, going so far as to butcher both the <\/span>2,000-year-old teaching<\/span><\/a> of the Catholic Church and the theology of Aquinas \u2013 a 12th-century priest and philosopher, considered a <\/span>Doctor of the Catholic Church<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conroy makes three major false claims \u2014\u00a0namely, that abortion is a Constitutional right, that \u201cpro-choice\u201d and \u201cpro-abortion\u201d are not necessarily synonymous, and that \u201cpro-choice\u201d is both the proper American and the proper Catholic position to take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Misrepresenting the Constitution<\/b><\/p>\n

Referring to abortion, Conroy <\/span>said<\/span><\/a>, \u201c[W]omen in our system have this constitutional right[.]\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

This is a flat-out falsehood. Nowhere in the <\/span>U.S. Constitution<\/span><\/a> is there a delineated right to kill one\u2019s preborn children. On the contrary, the Fourteenth Amendment <\/span>says<\/span><\/a> that states may not deprive anyone of life without due process, nor deny them equal protection under the law. Abortion is a clear violation of these provisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shifty Definitions<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c[A] pro-choice Democrat isn\u2019t a pro-abortion person,\u201d <\/span>said<\/span><\/a> Conroy, implying that one could be the former without necessarily being the latter. This is disingenuous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One <\/span>definition<\/span><\/a> of the word \u201cpromote\u201d is: \u201c[T]o encourage or support something, or to help something become successful.\u201d If one pushes for the ability to perform some action\u2013any action\u2013without legal consequences, that person is, by definition, promoting that action. If someone lobbied for the ability to legally \u201cchoose\u201d to commit rape, we would rightly describe that person as \u201cpro-rape,\u201d whether or not they had personally raped someone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Conroy is making a distinction without a difference.<\/span><\/p>\n

Erroneously Evaluated Values<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no debate, in my mind, about the tragedy of abortion,\u201d Conroy <\/span>commented<\/span><\/a> to the Post. On the other hand, he said, \u201c[the mother] is the one to make her choice; we should not make it for her.\u201d He elaborates on this position, saying: \u201cBy the way, I want to know the American who thinks the government should take away their choice in any area of their life \u2026 It\u2019s an American value that each one of us can choose where our life is going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s right about two things: abortion <\/span>is<\/span><\/i> a tragedy, and the right to self-determination <\/span>is<\/span><\/i> an American value \u2013\u00a0<\/span>that\u2019s a major reason why abortion is wrong<\/span><\/i>. There are multiple \u201cselves\u201d involved in an abortion, which is the very act of one party robbing the other of self-determination. This subjugation of one person to another is <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> an American value.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many \u201cchoices\u201d that are legally prohibited in any civilized society \u2014 the \u201cchoice\u201d to steal, or abuse one\u2019s children, or drive faster than the posted speed limit, to cite but a few examples. Someone can still violate the law, but not without consequences. Failure to prohibit certain “choices”\u00a0\u2014 especially those that intentionally cause bodily harm to others \u2014\u00a0would be tantamount to endorsing anarchy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wandering into Myths<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Conroy postulates that \u201cchoice\u201d is a Catholic value, too. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThomas Aquinas says if your conscience says to do something the church says is a sin, you are bound to follow your conscience. That\u2019s Thomas Aquinas!\u201d <\/span>claimed<\/span><\/a> Conroy. This is a gross oversimplification and misrepresentation of Aquinas\u2019s actual theology on conscience; furthermore, Conroy\u2019s suggestion that Catholics should support legal abortion is a rejection of 2,000 years of Catholic doctrine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The belief in <\/span>free will<\/span><\/a> is indeed a Catholic teaching. But there is no Catholic doctrine stating that all choices are equally valid, or that nothing should be prohibited. Catholics are by definition people who believe in the prohibition of certain behaviors \u2013 the Ten Commandments are a list of prohibitions, and among them is murder. This is why the Church has <\/span>always taught<\/span><\/a> that abortion is wrong. The prohibition against killing the innocent comes directly from God \u2013 and we don\u2019t get veto power over our Creator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aquinas did teach that people are bound to follow their consciences; but he did <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> say that conscience is an infallible guide. According to <\/span>Aquinas Online<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

[Aquinas] also believes that one has a duty to have a well-formed conscience, one that knows what the right thing to do is \u2026 Aquinas also believes that the <\/span>Church is an infallible guide <\/span><\/a>in faith and morals, so it could be argued that for one to disagree with the Church, ipso facto, shows one has not formed one\u2019s conscience well \u2026 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

To say that one is bound to follow an erring conscience is not to say that one is morally justified in doing any- and everything one is inclined to do. If every action was morally right just because one wanted to do it, it would be logically impossible to commit any morally wrong act; and this would empty \u201cmorally right and wrong\u201d of any meaning. Moreover, everyone knows that certain actions by individuals just are morally wrong, and the individuals who did them are guilty of wrongdoing, despite the fact that the perpetrator thought it was a good thing. \u2026 In such cases, even an \u201cerring conscience\u201d does not justify or excuse the moral evil.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Clearly Conroy\u2019s assessment of Aquinas\u2019s teachings is misguided at best. And his comments force one to ask, if all choices are equally legitimate, why adopt a system of beliefs? Why be Catholic, or any other religion? But Conroy doesn\u2019t connect those dots. Rather, he endorses \u201cmak[ing] it possible for [a mother] to optimize her ability to make the choice\u201d \u2026 whatever <\/span>that<\/span><\/i> means.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some \u201cchoices\u201d are wrong, and we usually make laws forbidding those choices. As a priest, Conroy knows the Catholic Church\u2019s 2,000-year-old teaching on abortion. If he doesn\u2019t agree with it, he should perhaps reconsider his vocation. Using his platform to subvert the teachings of the institution he claims to represent is underhanded, at best. And glibly distorting the philosophy of someone who championed those teachings in order to justify the brutal, ongoing slaughter of the innocent is plainly wrong \u2013 whether or not Conroy\u2019s conscience concurs.<\/span><\/p>\n
