Legal abortions since 1973 are now estimated to have risen to approximately 63.5 million (63,459,781), according to recently published<\/a>\u00a0totals from National Right to Life (NRTL). The staggering number averages out to 1.3 million babies violently killed annually by abortion in the past 48 years \u2014\u00a0nearly 3,600 each day since the infamous Roe v. Wade<\/em> Supreme Court decision forced legalized abortion upon every state in the nation.<\/p>\n

Abortions since 1973 estimated by National Right to Life (NRTL)<\/p><\/div>\n

NRTL’s 63,459,781 (63.5 million) total was tallied using data published by the Guttmacher Institute for the years 1973 through 2017 (the latest published report). Guttmacher’s totals tend to be more comprehensive than those of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NRTL additionally estimated abortion numbers for each year from 2018 to 2021 to arrive at its grand total of lives lost to abortion.<\/p>\n

Every abortion represents the death of a unique preborn human being<\/strong><\/h4>\n

To give some perspective, 63.5 million lives is equal to the majority of the populations<\/a> of California and Texas combined. It also represents slightly more than 83% of the total number of children who were registered in school (76.4 million) in 2017<\/a>, according to the CDC, and 19% of the entire U.S. population, which the U.S. Census Bureau projected<\/a>\u00a0had reached 332,403,650<\/a> on Jan. 1, 2022.<\/p>\n

These babies killed by legal abortion since 1973 would total nearly three-fourths of the population<\/a> of Germany, nearly half<\/a> of the population of Mexico, and nearly all of the current\u00a0population<\/a> of the United Kingdom and Italy.<\/p>\n

How abortion data is collected<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Two national groups collect data on abortion, and there are a\u00a0number of differences<\/a>\u00a0in the two reporting agencies.<\/p>\n

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/strong>\u00a0collects information provided by states which voluntarily choose to report. But due to a wide variety of state requirements on abortions, the CDC fails to account for every state. The CDC’s latest report for 2019<\/a> recorded 629,898 abortions from 49 reporting areas (47 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City, excluding California, Maryland, and New Hampshire).<\/p>\n

Under “methods” of the 2019 report<\/a>, the CDC states, “In most states and jurisdictions, collection of abortion data is facilitated by a legal requirement for hospitals, facilities, or physicians to report abortions to a central health agency (12<\/i>); however, reporting is not complete in all areas, including in some areas with reporting requirements (13<\/i>). Because the reporting of abortion data to CDC is voluntary<\/em>, many reporting areas have developed their own data collection forms and might not collect or provide all the information requested by CDC. As a result, the level of detail reported by CDC on the characteristics of women obtaining abortions might vary from year to year and by reporting area.”<\/p>\n

“According to the CDC, the percentage performed with chemical abortifacients like mifepristone rose from 9.6% in 2004 to 43.7% in 2019<\/a>,” NRTL wrote in their summary.<\/p>\n

To date, the CDC reports that\u00a0approximately 18% of all pregnancies in the United States end in induced abortion.<\/p>\n

The Guttmacher Institute<\/strong>,\u00a0a former \u201cspecial affiliate<\/a>\u201d of Planned Parenthood, tends to be\u00a0more comprehensive<\/a>\u00a0since it gathers information from a number of contacts within the abortion industry. The latest published data<\/a> on abortion numbers by Guttmacher is from 2017, where the Institute recorded\u00a0862,320<\/strong>\u00a0abortions that year, or 2,363 every day.<\/p>\n

Guttmacher has not stated<\/a> why its published abortion data has not been updated from four years ago.<\/p>\n

Abortion rate has fallen significantly in past decades<\/strong><\/h4>\n

While the numbers are staggering, raw abortion numbers, along with the abortion rate and ratio, have fallen significantly in past decades.<\/p>\n

In 1973, the CDC recorded 615,831 abortions slightly under the 629,898 recorded in 2019<\/a>\u00a0and drastically lower (by nearly 57%) than\u00a0their\u00a0highest peak<\/a>\u00a0of 1,429,247 abortions reported in 1990. The CDC also notes that from 2010 to 2019,\u00a0the abortion rate decreased 21% (from 14.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years), and the abortion ratio decreased 13% (from 225 abortions per 1,000 live births). The good news is that in 2019, the abortion rate (number of abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years) still showed a\u00a0decline of nearly 53%<\/strong>\u00a0from where it was in\u00a01990<\/a>\u00a0(24 v. 11.4), and a decrease of nearly 19%\u00a0 since\u00a01973<\/a>\u00a0(14 v. 11.4).<\/p>\n

In 1973, Guttmacher reported\u00a0744,610 abortions, increasing to 898,570 abortions in 1974. Abortion numbers peaked in 1990 with over 1.6 million (1,608,600) abortions recorded that year, but by 2017<\/a>, abortions had\u00a0dropped nearly 46.4% to 862,320.<\/p>\n

An analysis of Guttmacher’s latest published\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0for 2017 by Dr. Michael J. New<\/a>, visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science and Social Research at The Catholic University of America and Associate Scholar at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, revealed that the abortion rate was actually lower in 2017 than what it was in 1973. Overall, Dr. New reported that the abortion rate in 2017 was 13.5 abortions per thousand women of childbearing age. In addition, he noted that in 2017, the U.S. abortion rate had fallen by over 53% since its peak in 1980..<\/p>\n
