Wade: President Obama and National Right to Life president Carol Tobias offer differing perspectives"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>On Tuesday, Americans marked the 40<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>. For some, such as President Obama, the anniversary was a time to rejoice. In a statement released by the White house, President Obama said, \u201cOn the 40<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of <em>Roe v Wade<\/em>, we reaffirm its historic commitment to protect the health and reproductive freedom of women across this country and stand by its guiding principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters, and women should be able to make their own choices about their bodies and their health care.\u201d The president went on to explain that his administration \u201ccontinues our efforts to reduce unintended pregnancies, support maternal and child health, and minimize the need for abortion.\u201d (You can read the president\u2019s statement in its entirety <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2013\/01\/22\/statement-president-roe-v-wade-anniversary\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26099\" style=\"margin: 2px 15px;\" alt=\"carol-tobias1\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/carol-tobias1-184x300.jpg\" width=\"184\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/carol-tobias1-184x300.jpg 184w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/carol-tobias1.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/>For other Americans, the anniversary was a time to mourn and hope for change in the future. In a prepared statement released to reporters after a teleconference call on Tuesday, National Right to Life president Carol Tobias said, \u201cToday, we commemorate the 40\u00a0anniversary of the saddest day in American history; the day that the unalienable right to life was ignored and trampled.\u00a0January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court handed down their decisions in the <em>Roe v Wade<\/em> and <em>Doe v Bolton<\/em> cases. Those decisions have resulted in the death of more than 55 million unborn children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tobias, while noting that \u201cwe mourn the loss of those children,\u201d also pointed to signs of hope.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tobias, \u201c[t]he number of abortions is in decline. Our country had an all time high of 1.6 million abortions in 1990. That number has dropped to 1.2 million per year. Pro-life efforts are saving 400,000 babies every year. The abortion rate, which is the number of abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age, and the abortion ratio, the number of abortions for every 1,000 live births, are both down to the lowest recorded levels since the Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to President Obama\u2019s statement, the National Right to Life president noted, \u201cWhile the pro-abortion movement offers only a dead baby as the solution for a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, the right-to-life movement remains more committed than ever to protecting unborn children and providing compassionate, life-affirming alternatives to their mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Life or death?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":26102,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>40 years of Roe v.
